This is the basics of Straight Edge. Separating the truth from the rumors.

Straight Edge is a movement that stems from the Hardcore/Punk scene. The term originated in 1980, and has grown since. It is a personal life choice that anyone can make. Straight Edge is a great way to better your future, and is an idea where anyone can be accepted. There is no membership, groups, or anything like that. Anyone can better there life by having the strength to stay clean. This subject means a lot to me because I am straight edge.

There are many rumors and misunderstandings about the ideology of Straight Edge. I would like abolish the rumors, and teach you what it is really about. First of all, these are the basics of straight edge, refraining from alcohol, recreational drugs, tobacco, and participating in promiscuous sexual activities. A lot of people think that this means if you’re straight edge you can’t ever have sex. That is just idiotic, that would mean we could never reproduce. What this means is, you can’t sleep around. If you are going to be participating in sexual activities, you are in a committed relationship with your partner. This doesn’t mean that you have to be married, but you are at least in love with them. Another hot topic is the definition of “drugs”. Anything without moderation could be considered a drug. Many people claim that taking ibuprofen with a headache or drinking anything with caffeine would be breaking edge, those people are what we refer to as idiots. What the Straight Edge culture refrains from is recreational drugs such as marijuana, LSD, cocaine, etc. Anything prescribed by a doctor is okay, as long as it is not abused. Some people tie in Veganism with Straight Edge. The founders of Straight Edge were vegans, but they did not claim it as a part of Edge. Once again, the basics of Straight Edge are no recreational drugs, no alcohol or tobacco, and no promiscuous sex. As you can see, these rules are very basic with no gray areas. There are many reasons to embrace the idea of Straight Edge. Many people decide to because of family problems with drugs or alcohol, or wanting to be different than 90% of high school students, to create a better future for you, or just to make a healthier life for yourself. For whatever reason you do it, be proud of it.

Straight Edge was started completely unintentionally. Ian MacKaye was just a young punk who didn’t partake in those activities. He was a just a sober punk in the late 70’s. In 1979, he started going to punk shows in New York City. He knew that punks were more understanding of different lifestyles because they were deviants themselves, but the punks were not accepting of his lifestyle. They gave him a hard time for being the only sober guy in the club. In 1980, he started his first band Minor Threat. He wrote the song Straight Edge. The song’s meaning was that, he’s just the same as every other punk, but he has a little more of an edge because he has a clear mind. The lyric was “I’ve got the straight edge”. After this song was released, the term “straight edge” spread like wildfire. It was all over the country, punks wanted to be a part of this “straight edge” life. Ian was completely unaware of what he started. The symbol, “X” came from the X on the back of underage kids who went to bars to watch bands. The X was meant to show that those kids cannot be served alcohol. The straight edge adopted this symbol to represent their abstinence from alcohol. After the term spread, Ray Cappo was inspired and wanted to start the first Straight Edge band. Youth of Today started during the 80’s in New York. Many bands followed after, and the made a group called “Youth Crew”. There were many bands part of the crew, the toured together and spread the word. The hardcore music taught life lessons, it was more than music. But just like every group, there are radicals. Straight Edge gangs started forming in major cities such as Boston, Philadelphia, New York, and Columbus. The most notable would be the FSU (Friends Stand United) in Boston. These groups would go to all ages shows and physically harm anyone who would smoke or drink at the shows. The FSU also targeted the Neo-Nazi groups. The gang is very serious; they have murdered multiple victims, and have done a great amount of damage to others. They claim to help keep the streets of Boston clean, but they are only creating the same amount of trouble that the drugs do.

In the 1990’s the scene split into two major groups, the Militant Straight Edge and Krishna Consciousness. The militant ones were very arrogant and violent. They wore a lot of camo clothing, and consisted mostly of skinheads. The Krishna Consciousness was a spiritual Krishna idea that was basically brought to the straight edge by Ray Cappo. Ray had moved to India and became a monk for 6 years before returning back to his hardcore band in New York. The Krishna Consciousness members had similar ideals as the straight edge, but they were no strict. You must be a vegan, and refuse gambling, illicit sex, or intoxication. If you were not a part of either group, you were how Straight Edge is supposed to be, a personal choice. You were not shoving it down anyone’s throat or creating unessicary violence. Straight Edge today has changed. The militancy died out somewhat, yet there are a few gangs still remaining. Today, most straight edge are arrogant, bitter, and they think that they are superior to anyone who is not Straight Edge. They do not understand that it is a personal choice, and I hate to be classified in the same group as these people. But not all straight edge are this way, there are still some of the positive sober bands together. As long as people believe in how it started and understand the meaning of it, I will be happy. Hopefully, this arrogance and ignorance will die out and the original positive-ness will return to the scene.

As you have already read in the previous paragraphs, the basics of Straight Edge are to keep away from drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and promiscuous sex. Anyone can do it, and there are many reasons for doing it. The idea was started in 1980 by Ian MacKaye, and he accidently made a following out of it. The idea progressed into a long history of violence and culture. Straight edge is a great way to better your own future and anyone can do it, even you. There are no memberships, groups, or organizations, any individual at anytime can become Straight Edge. This topic is very meaningful to me because I am straight edge.

	Though texting is a valuable way of communicating, some people spend too much time sending messages by phone instead of interacting with others face to face. This article explores both the sides of this issue.

The term communication refers to the exchange of ideas and information between two or more people in order to create complete understanding. It is an art that has been practiced by the human race since the moment they felt their existence on this planet, almost parallel to drawing the first breath of life. Still, like every other field, it failed to remain untouched by the omnipotence of the ever advancing science and technology.

“The process of scientific discovery is in effect a continual flight from wonder.” – Albert Einstein

Justifying the words of the great man, to whom science would ever remain indebted, this field has never looked back once during its journey. However, this lightning paced march ahead has not always proved fruitful. As such, the battle between the pros and cons remains eternal and everlasting.

One such field which science took in its stride to develop was that of communication. Telephones, cellular phones, etc kept springing up in their own quick time thus shaping an era of their own. Not only was this effect monumental at the time of introduction but was there to stay, with today’s scene being such that people find themselves handicapped without their cell phones. From communication to entertainment to business, this device gripped the world in such a sensation that it finds it all the more difficult to come out of its grip even today. This was made possible by its manifold advantages which lulled people into an extremely lucrative state of perennial comfort and joy.

One such major benefit that it offered was that of messaging. The facility of leaving behind a message that the receiver could answer in his own sweet time not only provided the users with convenience but also with the advantage of cost savings. Besides, the steady growth in usage and popularity of this facility led to many more such advantages that ultimately led to its shot to fame and popularity.

One major question that pops up here is, why even try to get out of this grip if it is so full of boons! Well, going back a few paras would reveal the answer. As with every other thing on this vast planet, no matter how useful it may prove to be, it always has a flip or reverse side, the darker side.

Initially, nothing wrong could be spotted with messaging. However, its development into a mania soon led people to ponder about its adverse effects. Sure enough, it attracted a whole lot of negative angles to it. Excessive texting led parents to complain about the lack of involvement of the child in all other matters pertaining to education, socialising, etc. Performances started declining, tempers started running high. A whole lot of other disturbing changes started taking place in the everyday household. The GenX however could see nothing out of the normal and the reason behind all these petty brawls was once again attributed to the problems of generation gap, the vague term used to cover the umpteen blemishes of the world.

One such major issue that came up in the anti-texting wake was the hindrance in the development of social skills. People, especially the youth started becoming addicted to messaging, thus ignoring the other important (in many cases more so) virtues of life. They would prefer dropping a message rather than interacting face to face with people. However, no extent of scientific discovery could undermine the importance of this age old art of communicating which in its purest sense most resembled face to face communication. Social skills were chided upon with messaging being deemed a perfect substitute to its traditional counterparts. This instilled a false sense of socializing in people who relied on mere texting and other forms of chatting to render them social. Reality however preferred to stay away from this misconception. People started losing out on their ability to converse or converse effectively with people when in a gathering. Their unwavering support for texting failed to aid them when in a fix while actually communicating.

These developments land us in the present scenario with both the aspects being wide open providing different perspectives to the issue in hand. This leaves us with some degree of jurisdiction to exercise while framing our personal opinions without being called biased. In my opinion, though texting has invaded the privacy and other aspects of our lives, its importance cannot be undermined.

The somewhat diplomatic stance finds its proof in the fact that though technology today wields considerable power over mankind, it has not yet achieved the license to control us. That is still just a part of our fictitious creations.

“Science merely provides us with the raw materials. It is we who put it to multiple uses, develop the products and then judge science on the basis of the products’ worth.”

Hence, as masters of our mind and more so of our own selves, we cannot entirely put the onus of our shortcomings on these technological instruments and their facilities. We must learn to accept our folly and strive towards overcoming our own mistakes instead of merely transferring the fault over to these inanimate beings while slyly basking in the glory of our assumptions. We are the ones who’ve developed it and we are the ones who must know how to use it judiciously. Hence, instead of cursing the discovery, we must bring about the requisite changes in our usage patterns and relish its splendors in the actual sense.

Thus going back over the previous paras, we can for ourselves see what the case is. The opinion expressed obviously is at an individual level and hence can never be expected to apply to all. However, the motive remained in convincing people about the accuracy of this stream of views and not in the least speculating on the status of others’. So, ignoring the claims of myself and my views being deemed a teenager’s and hence a biased perspective, I would proudly like to proclaim: hence proved.

Most parents wonder if it is desirable to let the children watch TV without any restrictions or if the violence of cartoons will not shock their cherub. But what about teenagers or adults? Are they really impervious to the violent images of the small screen? Nothing is less certain. U.S. scientists have just proven the opposite.

Their study, published in the prestigious American scientific journal “Science”, acknowledges the comments collected from more than 700 people followed over 17 years! During this period, psychologists have been conducting extensive interviews with youth and their parents and thus determine the time they passed the télévision.Dans the same time, researchers have identified violence (fights, assaults, use of weapons, threats, etc..) committed by these young people, from questionnaires completed by families and also through the files of the police and the FBI.

A research paper I wrote for school defending violent video games.

In past centuries, a variety of art forms have taken the blame for society’s problems. From literature to religious texts, to jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, and rap, to television, movies, and comic books, people have viewed various media as being responsible for personal failings, as if such media were like the serpent in the Garden of Eden, leading us astray from our natural goodness. Increasingly, in the past two decades, video games have been the scapegoat du jour. The video-game platform is the newest kid on the media block and, as such, is subject to a particularly high dose of suspicion and scrutiny. I think that this is wrong and, indeed, dangerous.

There has yet to be a study that can find any solid link between violent video games and people committing violent acts. So do video games really make us more violent? Youth violence often gets blamed on video games, but not other violence. In fact, violent video games may even reduce aggressiveness by acting as a safe outlet for anger and stress.

The battle over violence in video games has been going on since the 1970’s, when a game called Death Race was released. The purpose of the game was to run over “gremlins” that many claimed looked too much like humans. Ironically, people protested by dragging Death Race machines out of arcades and burning them, that is violent in itself. Almost every time there is a major violent crime, the blame is placed mostly on video games, especially when youth are involved. There have been many attempts to pass legislation against violence in video games, with few being successful. In 1994 the video game industry voluntarily established the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) to try to avoid government involvement. As video games continue to become more realistic, so does the concern of the effects of such graphic violence.

One of the biggest concerns most people have about violence in video games is how they affect youth. Parents are concerned that children are playing video games that are too violent for their age. Whether violent video games effect teens and adults or not, many fear that younger children may be more easily influenced by the violence. If this is true, it should be the parents’ choice and responsibility to decide what they allow their children to play. Letting your child play with knives may not be in their best interest either, but there is no specific law against that. It is just common sense that the parents would not give knives to their child. Since there is little research that effectively decides if violent video games affect us, it is the parents’ choice to make. Video game historian Keith Feinstein notes that: “the Columbine shooters played with pipe bombs in their basement and no one stopped them from playing Doom. But no one stopped them from building pipe bombs in their basement, either”. As for the rest of us, we will not be turning into mass murderers anytime soon. Research has found some negative effects of video games pertaining to violence and aggression, but these effects are minimal, and are comparable to many other sources of violence in our society, “some media-violence researchers recently published an article suggesting that reading passages from the Bible with violent content increases “aggression” in much the same way that video games supposedly do. So if video games have to be restricted from children, apparently so do at least some portions of the Bible”, “And, of course, videogames aren’t the only pastimes that could lead to aggression: dodgeball, paintball, and a bad beat in Texas Hold ‘Em can heighten arousal, too. Dr. Vincent Mathews, a radiologist at Indiana University who has studied the brain’s response to violent video games, suggests that the effects of these other activities would be comparable. “I would think that paintball or dodgeball would show similar results,” he says. “But no one is calling for these games to be banned””. We are surrounded by violence, so why pick on one source that is no worse than the rest?

There has been a lot of research done to try to prove violent video games do make us more violent. Many claim that their results show this is true. However, most studies have produced varied and inaccurate results. Publication bias is a huge issue, “Admittedly, publication bias (the tendency to publish articles that support a hypothesis and not publish those that do not) is very likely a widespread problem in the social sciences and is not unique to video-game studies”. In my own research I found it more difficult to find articles defending video games than I did articles that accused video games of more than just making us more violent. Publication bias can also be linked with over exaggeration, “social scientists may be too prone to make big and frightening pronouncements from weak results”. Other studies have been flawed due to factors like using outdated video games, “Reading the fine print in the Dill and Anderson study, for example, reveals that the researchers used outdated, mismatched games and required an absurdly brief amount of actual playtime from the subjects”. In addition, for some reason there has been very little long term research done. How can we possibly determine the effects video games have on us if we do not conduct studies that last for more than an one or two hours at a time? If there were to be any drastic effects of playing violent video games they would not all be instant. Dr. Dmitri Williams of the University of Illinois said “You can’t study people for 20 minutes and know what’s going to happen to people in society 10 years later”. Another obstacle that hinders any research done is the inability to replicate or allow for actual acts of serious violence. Although it would be effective, we can’t give test subjects a loaded gun and see what they’ll do with it after playing a video game for 10 minutes. ”We can’t have people assault, rape, or murder someone” in the lab, says Dr. Brad Bushman, a University of Michigan psychologist who studies the effects of media violence. After sorting through all the studies that have been done, and take the above issues into consideration, there remains no significant proof of any link between playing violent video games and becoming more aggressive or violent, “My meta-analysis concluded that there was no evidence to support either a causal or correlational relationship between video games and aggressive behavior”.

If video games have been accused of making us more violent for many years now, and no one has successfully been able to prove it, why are we still worried about it? To fully understand where this fear of violent video games came from, you must first understand who the people that have this fear are. Looking back in history, there has always been something that parents of a certain generation were afraid of because they thought it would harm the youth of that generation, “Like Elvis in the 50s, or Dungeons & Dragons in the 1980s, videogames are still viewed as the dangerous scourge of youth culture”. It is mainly the last generation, who are unfamiliar with video games that blame them for the youth violence they see on the news. Many are intimidated of video games because they do not understand them and the complex culture and effects that surround them; “when people are frightened, oversimplifying a complex problem becomes attractive as a quick, easy fix to an otherwise imposing cultural barrier”, “it is the underlying technology that frightens older generations who can’t comprehend the fast changing mechanics shaping the way the world interacts”,”They do not understand the modern language. They become frightened of what they do not understand.” says video game historian Keith Feinstein. What a lot of people have forgotten is that it is not just youth who are playing violent video games. Many people in their twenties and thirties have grown up with video games and continue to play them. However when there is a violent crime committed by an adult, no one questions if video games are to blame, “We are for some reason more interested in violence when it is committed by young people. But we didn’t ask what kind of music and video games Tim McVeigh [the Oklahoma City bomber] was into” said Sociologist Karen Sternheimer, specializing in pop culture and youth at the University of Southern California. This is the perfect example of how we can blame video games for our problems without looking at the bigger picture. Violent video games have essentially been stereotyped.

One thing I have found odd about all this video game controversy is that we have overlooked our own intelligence. If we are smart enough to conduct studies about their effect on us, then are we not smart enough to know when a game is a game, and not to try to relive it in real life? “Video games, like the rest of the media, form a faceless specter that we have called into being with our own internal desires for sex and violence, yet can turn against when we need a straw man to blame for our own recklessness”, maybe we need to stop blaming video games, and take a look at ourselves: “people who had previously filled out questionnaires reflecting an even-keel personality were less aggro after playing a violent game. Those who had a more aggressive disposition were more susceptible to these heightened emotions”. So there is hope for our intelligence yet, it seems that violent people are more affected by violence in video games. Thus one can assume that people who commit violent crimes are just violent people, not mindless killers brainwashed by Grand Theft Auto. So what does that make the rest of us who play video games? Normal, “The British Board of Film Classification conducted a survey that found that “the violence helps make the play exhilaratingly out of reach of ordinary life…. Gamers seem not to lose awareness that they are playing a game and do not mistake the game for real life.”.

What if we have this backwards? What if, instead of thinking violent video games causing us to replicate that violence in real life, replicating violence in video games actually stops us from committing said violence for real? It is not a completely absurd thought. Maybe when we are angry and feel like punching the next person who says something to us, we can go blow someone’s head off in a video game and that will take the anger away. Although it probably depends on the type of person you are, I fully believe that taking your anger out on video games is very effective, as well as safe. I personally can relate to this. I also find playing all video games relaxing regardless of the level of violence in them. Now some people may agree with this, some may not, but there is one thing that may support this actually being true, “The numbers do not lie. Violent crime is down, but violence in video games is up”. Violent crimes have been going down over the same time period where video games have been growing more popular and more violent. No one knows if this is because video games help prevent real world violence or if the two facts are unrelated and just a coincidence, but how can video games be making us more violent if the facts prove the opposite? “Could you imagine how far the debate on global warming would have gotten if the earth’s atmospheric temperatures were decreasing while pollutants were being released?”

With all the research that has been done, it is still unclear if video games do make us more violent. What we do know is, if there are any effects at all, they are minimal. Since it remains a matter of opinion, the only thing we can do individually is make our own personal decision on what to play, and what to allow our children to play. Researcher Craig Anderson, chair of Iowa State University’s Department of Psychology said it best in my opinion, “It’s society, not science, that must decide how to deal with the negative effects of violent video games”. Is this going to stop me from playing video games with violence in them? No, so if you don’t mind, I will now go back to peacefully playing Call of Duty.

If you are willing to rush off for a moment to make the coursework or discussion of subjects, both when we become more critical to observe the behavior of young adolescent tendency today is certainly interesting to think about together.

If you are willing to rush off for a moment to make the coursework or discussion of subjects, both when we become more critical to observe the behavior of young adolescent tendency today is certainly interesting to think about together.

The rapid trend of capitalism and the conglomerate of certain elite quantitative growth of entertainment venues and shopping malls growing like mushrooms rainy season. These phenomena are directly or indirectly affect the culture and lifestyle of young teens now. Cultural shift began to infect the young teenager with no compromise and the massive exodus of young people think about the paradigm of youth, from the eastern culture to western culture. You can see young teen hedonist bersliweran with various modes of hair with a tank top or dress junkies, and other digital tools. The climate is now much different from the past. However, if we examine this phenomenon further that young teenagers have fallen into the euphoria of pop culture. The next youth should be a gay teenager who falls into superficiality instead significans value of life.

This is only to invite the reader to contemplate the impact of globalization without having hooked into the mainstream superficiality of life post-modernization and how it does not undermine the positive values of our cultural heritage.

Teen Pop Culture euphoria: Fruit of Globalization

Humans have changed. That’s the basic thing that should be considered together. It is true bahwasannya man with all his intellect and culture should be developed as optimal as possible, because it will further established that its position in the earth as a perfect creature God than other creatures.

This time, the man turned toward the timeframe kontradiksional with previous phases, the phase of globalization. On the one hand, humans are expected to evolve towards a more modern direction, whether in technology, law, social / social welfare, politics, democracy, and all other systems must be improved. Field of informatics technology, medicine, biotechnology, and transportation has developed so fierce overcome the limits of space and time.

However, it should not be forgotten that the result of human development is relative and ambivalent. Negative effects of globalization is the euphoria of pop culture, free trade, the marginalization of the weak, and the incidence of gap relation antaara the rich and the poor. These results have established a new culture for society, especially young teenagers become a human being trapped in the current pop culture.

Young people living the life dikalanagan The shallow

The illustration at the beginning of this paper is to prove the existence of a little deskrispsi tendency in modern humans. There are many other examples as a result of globalization. young teens today are more like reading comics or playing games instead of having to read quality books. Reading with a thorough analysis and quality novels only a small part of their priorities, such as reading materials that touched only when forced to or because of academic demands.

You can deny that these symptoms is an adaptive form of progress. But, it is a rationalization. Actually, the human tendency now is not just a problem with the times but this is a matter of pride and appreciation of life.

The most striking evidence is the television, television programs are increasingly distant from the ideals of journalism, even legalizing the culture of violence, instanisasi, and other forms of criminality. Most of impressions, those impressions mendangkalkan only the affective nature of human beings. Impressions of natural disasters, poverty, war, famine, technological discovery, learning culture, and so have made the human affections are not sensitive to it. There is no inner and intellectual process further. Appreciation of the noble values of the reduced.

The existence of young adolescents only be placed on temporary admissions, for example, there existence is considered to be a teenager if the teenager into a motorcycle gang member, using branded clothes, using blueberries, clubbing, clubbing, do freesex, ngedrugs, and so forth. The existence of young teenagers just appreciated the extent of ownership and status only. If siltation continues to be maintained and cultivated among our youth, meaning and respect for human beings further and further away. The result is the disappearance of respect for other human beings, such as war, rape, the commercialization of organ trafficking, fights, etc.. These examples are an indication of the destruction of a culture that started from a shift in cultural values among the young youth. The impact is very sad and worrying!

Solution: Internalization

As previously disclosed that a man as homo significans, essentially giving people as people make meaning. Most effective tactics to overcome the superficiality of life post-modernization is the deposition or internalization. Internalization is the process of re-interpret the meanings of life. The meaning of life that had been rewarded shallow, dug and delved into this time.

There are two methods of internalization offered to the culture of reflection and silence. Both are complementary and can not be separated if you want to fight the current pop culture. Reflection requires silence. Silence can be achieved when people reflect. Etymologically, the reflection comes from the Latin Verbum Compositum re-flectere, among other means, turn, turn, back, reflect, and think. Presumably, the meaning of the last two matches to define the reflection within the framework of these reflections. Reflection is an attempt to look back at something in depth by using the mind and affections to be able to find a noble values which can then be used as a basis for life. Euphoria in the globalization of pop culture offers so many things that just end up being without any impressions that can be experienced. With a culture of reflection, these impressions can be deposited. Individually negative and positive experiences can be analyzed, considered, summarized, and finally deposited in conscience. The process is what makes young teenagers can recognize good and bad an attitude. In this process also young teens are invited to follow the experiences gained, so it appears the values of each event is experienced, and of course that value could be the next life provision.

The role of reflection in this framework as well as a prophet, to remind any prohibition or command of God is taught. Reflection plays a critical function in young adolescents. As he had lived the values of silting in the form of pragmatism, blind conformity and so on. Reflection shows his mistake, and leads to the right.

Therefore, we as young teens should be able to change ourselves to be human that are meaningful to others through attitudes and everyday behavior. This effort can only be achieved through personal effort rather than others, there is a saying do not change other people before you can change yourself. O reflect the young survivors … !

Discrimination in interviews etc.

Yes another youth unemployment article, but this time we are going to look at what can stop young people getting a job.

Piercings
Many employers don’t like piercings other than the traditional ear piercings. So that means if a young person has nose, lip or stretched ear piercings then they’d better remove them if they want the job.

Tattoos
Again many employers dislike tats especially if its in a noticeable place ie. forearm, neck etc. Even more so if its something that can be deemed offensive. If a young person is unemployed, with a tattoo they can pretty much kiss a job goodbye.

Hair colour
Many young people love to experiment with wild and wacky hair colours like pink, blue, green and purple but this can have a negative effect on a possible employer as it can look intimidating or just too wild. Employers tend not to allow it.

Now there are a number of other factors that can stop a young person from obtaining employment but why should these three things matter? They are forms of self expression. Why can’t we express ourselves the way we want to? If you ask me its pure discrimination. Basing whether or not a youth can have a job based on hair colour?

Geez what is the world coming too?!

Our Youth, Our Future!!! What does it entail to be the youth of our generation? The whole world looks up to us, still only a few make make use of these opportunities. The world yearns for a change, a change this generation can bring, if and only if we put our minds to it.

Suppose the world was round, it would take ME to complete the shape. It would take MY IDEAS to make a final decision; it would take MY STEP to reach a final destination.

As it is today, our own world is not round; it is in stages, man-made stages. It comprises of a whole lot, those who make decisions, those who carry out these decisions and even those who judge the actions of the makers and executors of these decisions. Our world also comprises of people who do not have a say, they do not have the opportunity to make decisions, they are not even opportune to carry out actions of their own free will, and all they do is watch and be expectant.

We are said to be free people, but what we actually possess is “limited freedom”. The place of the youth in the society, though sensitive, has been underestimated. Sensitive in the sense that even when the youth are not granted freedom, they create their own freedom; when they are being denied of opportunities to be seen or heard, they create awareness. When thoughts, ideas and decisions become obsolete, the fresh brains explore new ideas. When it seems like all we tend to achieve is backwardness, the new age craves for progress.

Now…

This brings us down to the boiling point…

Until we choose to accept the fact that we actually need each other to move forward, we would have no choice but to remain stagnant.

Until we cling to the theory which states that different broken lines will never form a bridge, we would have no choice but to be presidents of our respective worlds.

Until we realize that the old hands have become weary and we need agile, strong hands as pillars, then we would have no choice but to remain on a building that will be demolished in no time.

But how can we be strong pillars when all we do is sit back, relent and wait hopelessly for someone else to take a first step to progress? How can we be strong pillars when we the youth practice acts of insanity, become slaves to drunkenness, drugs and other excruciating acts? How can we be strong pillars when those who should be standing are staggering, due to indecision, corrupt practices and even alienation?

We are the future of our world and we must take our place. We seem to have forgotten that a threefold chord cannot be broken, and that it is impossible to bisect a bunch of broom.

I need you and we need each other as youths with a purpose driven future to bridge this infinite gap to success, and this is my theory: the world can take any form it chooses, in fact, it has no definite shape, it only has the form of a shape I term US…(that is You and I linked together)…

…

Young people and families who are deciding to move away from the region of the North Country, for economical and cultural reasons.

The North Country is the upper northern portion of Upstate New York made up of six counties with a combined population of less than 430,000. This region has retained its rural charm for the most part, which makes it naturally appealing, but does not offer the job opportunities and the multicultural exposure that you would get living in New York’s big cities. The result? Many young people and families are making an exodus out of the North Country, and heading for better jobs, better income, and a more multicultural environment.

The number of senior citizens now living in these communities is well above the state average and is predicted to follow this trend in the decades to come. The repercussions of this effecting the economy and the social life of these six counties will be tremendous. Frankly, the older generation provides backbone, experience, and stability for the communities they live in, but the younger generation gives fresh viewpoints, energy, focus, and momentum to various causes and issues that are going on in today’s world. This is a very touchy subject for many small towns all over the country. With all the other political and social distractions going on in this country, the changing demographic of rural America may fall through the cracks.

Older people as a whole believe that young people should stay in their hometowns and give back to their communities, instead of choosing to live and work somewhere else. The younger generation’s rebuttal of this mentality is that they can’t find meaningful work, which leaves them between a rock and hard place trying to make a living or maintain their homes, plus having to deal with the added expense of commuting back and forth to work. They feel that it’s more advantageous to chuck the old life they know and move on. The biggest complaint that young people have with the older generation is that they are quite unaccepting of their style, their music, and viewpoints. The frustration voiced by both generations, will probably never be settled.

Realistically, young people and many families who’ve decided to leave the North Country were left with little choice but to leave based on the circumstances they were faced with. Convincing young people to stay in a rural community, is a challenging request. A community should not only offer stability and roots for young people and families, but also nurtures their dreams and embraces their social ideas, and values. However, each generation has to be balanced about what to expect from the other, and make every effort to keep their communities from vanishing.
