When first learning about the food aid controversy, the promotion of biotech foods seems harmless. They can increase farmers’ productivity, lower the initial cost of food, prevent stem disease, and provide nutrition (Zoellick 2003, 1-2). Despite these appealing attributes, a large problem still exists. Despite the obvious benefits of biotech foods, EU has placed a block on all biotech foods. Because the EU will not lift its moratorium on genetically modified food, all foods that are traded cannot be genetically modified, thus biotech foods cannot be sold anywhere for profit. However, once EU removed its ban, African nations should be given the choice to prosper with GM foods without food aid from first world countries.
