Kwanzaa, an African Celebration

Kwanzaa comes from the phrase “matunda ya kwanzaa” this means “first fruits” in Swahili. Kwanzaa is celebrated by each family in their own way, and includes songs, dances, African drums, storytelling, poetry reading and a large traditional meal.

It came as a terrible shock to the drawing rooms of Victorian Britain. A British army wiped out by spear-carrying natives. The first phase of an unprincipled land-grab had come to a catastrophic conclusion. It was a great Zulu victory, but it could not be tolerated.

On December 16, 1838, some 470 Dutch Settlers were attacked by over 10,000 Zulu Warriors. In spite of great odds, the Dutch defeated the Zulu without the loss of a single life. The Zulus lost at least 3000.
