Hope
With all the craziness going on in the world around us, many people lose sight of what is really important–hope. Since the terrorist attack of 9-11, however, finding inspiration in the smallest of things has become a new reality.
“While there is life, there is hope.”—John Gay
When the unkind acts of others strike close to home, it is easy for us to question our faith in goodness. The tragic events of September 11, 2001, will forever leave Americans with a great sense of loss; however, with the power of hope, we can still be inspired. Scattered around us and in all walks of life, hope can be found where we least expect. More often than not people have a tendency to take for granted the little things in life; yet, these small details could be the most precious to us during our darkest moments.
One shining example of hope was brought to my attention in an unusual way. Feeling troubled by unforeseen difficulties, I decided to take comfort in the solitude of a blissful stroll. As I was walking along the outskirts of the nearby lake that cold, winter day; I caught a glimpse of an older gentleman sitting by the pier. He was surrounded by a curious crowd of passers-by, and as I made my way toward them to get a closer look, I quickly noticed that he had an American flag perched on the back of his wheelchair. I did not catch his name; however, next to him sat a box filled to the rim with various instruments and a sign that read: “The One Man Band.” As his weathered hands skillfully played, one by one, the assortment of instruments, I was somewhat unsettled by the many people who would just walk on by without even the slightest interest in this amazing person. I, however, and those people who did take a moment to watch, would be touched without end by the remarkable talent with which we had witnessed. I especially remember the soft lines in his face, and how he smiled with pride as he reminisced through his music the impression of hope.
The heart-felt tunes that he played so passionately on each of those beautiful gadgets literally warmed my soul. I was somehow comforted by his subtle messages of hope and filled with overwhelming emotion; I hardly noticed the bone-chilling air breezing across the cool waters. He easily conveyed to his audience the importance of reaching out to others, simply through song. I found inspiration in his ability to bring us together and lift our spirits. Here was a selfless individual who wanted nothing more than to encourage others through his musical entourage of instruments—a guitar, a harmonica, a set of home-made drums, spoons, and tambourine.
From that day on, I have tried to take time out now and then to recognize the simple pleasures surrounding us all, those little things we often take for granted. Life is short, as we were tragically reminded that fateful day in 2001. However, we can still find hope where we least expect it; one unique man opened my eyes to this, who will open yours?
