Liberty

What is Liberty in America?

Our country has fallen into the hands of a merciless dictator. America’s people cower in primitive tribe-like communities while the government, now essentially an army, executes decisions involving pay, childbirth, and housing. There is no American dream of a more successful life. What has happened? Where did our well-structured, people-oriented government go? Our country has lost its liberty, and with it the drive of the American people and the foundation upon which our country was based.

Liberty is an extremely complex idea with many aspects. First and foremost, liberty is our right to live as we will as long as we don’t infringe upon others way of life. That means that we can have seventeen babies, start our own business, or speak our mind freely without government suppression. However, as soon as somebody disregards others liberty by driving drunk or burning down a house, they are reprimanded. That is the basis of our law system.

Furthermore, liberty is not a God-given right, but a privilege socially created. While it is our natural instinct to desire and seek out liberty, it is something that we have made. Without each other, we would not know what liberty is. Without other beings to stop us from living in the state we wish, we would have no concept of liberty. It is only through people like Hitler, imposing his way of life onto the Jewish, and many other people that we have come to know the “right” of liberty, the desire to live freely.

Liberty is what our country is based upon. It is indeed the foundation our Forefathers laid down for us in 1787. The constitution wasn’t necessarily written to form our government. It was formed to limit it. By limiting our government and setting boundaries, we are securing our liberty and our way of life. Liberty is being governed by our consent. Our Forefathers knew that as a newly liberated nation, we would be keen to maintain that quality of life, and henceforth they formulated a government that would keep the people in control. It would allow for us to make changes if we ever felt as though our liberty was violated. This is shown by our checks and balances system. The President vetoing bills and appointing judges, Congress passing bills and approving judges, and the Supreme Court declaring both laws and presidential actions unconstitutional. This keeps any one office from becoming too powerful and presiding over us instead of governing.

Liberty is what drives the people of our country. The American people take great pride in living in a liberated country. It makes us feel connected to this great nation. Liberty is like an exclusive privilege to which we alone have access. It is the reason why every year there are over a million immigrants to the United States. In a country without liberty, life itself would be limited as demonstrated by China’s policy on childbirth. Every day in the United States, men and women get to wake up with the prospect of making a better life for themselves and their family with only hard work and enough will power. That is essentially the American Dream born through liberty.

Without liberty our country would not be nearly what it is today. Through liberty, we have grown into a representative government that values its people, and furthermore is allowed to govern instead of forcing people into submission. Through this system of government, we ensure our everlasting freedom to live as we will. For whether we succeed or fail, it will be through our own doing, which is truly what liberty is.
