The mother in “The Rocking Horse Winner” only cared about money and being lucky. She worried so much about getting rich that she did not even love her own children. Since her child, Paul, wasn’t getting the love that he deserved he drove himself crazy trying to predict the winner of horse races. This literally killed him in the end because his mother still never loved him. She wasn’t even upset when he died because she was so materialistic. This proves how a person can loose sight of some of the most important things in life just to have movie and get rich.

The Wife of Bath from the “Canterbury Tales” was very materialistic because all she cared about was money and clothes. Since that’s all she cared about she didn’t have many friends or anyone to be close to because she did not care about anyone. She forgot about all the important things in life because she tried so hard to get a lot of money and new clothes.

In the book “Macbeth” the main character wants to be king so bad that he kills so he can achieve his goal. He kills his best friend Banquo so he does not tell anyone his secrets then he kills the current king so he can succeed the throne. He received everything that he thought he wanted and was still miserable and ended up dying in the end. Macbeth is a good example of how a materialistic person can do horrible things to get what he wants which was to have ultimate power and the possessions that a king has.

Being materialistic is not a good characteristic to have because it can lead to obsession over something or someone. When your obsessed with something you do crazy things to get what your obsessed with like all of the characters mentioned above. The stories that people write reflect the real world and real people. It proves that horrible things can happen to materialistic people.
