10 Things You Should Not Say to Your Boss
The employees guide to managing your boss. Bosses can sometimes be difficult and this guide shows you how to get through the workday without getting fired.
1. “I feel really refreshed after this morning”. This should not be said in the afternoon after you are supposed to have been working hard all morning. Bosses expect us to be exhausted not refreshed by our labors! They don’t seem to appreciate us taking a refreshing nap during work hours!
2. “Your wife called but I said you couldn’t be disturbed as you were busy with your secretary”. This one will definitely not go down well with your boss. Your helpful comments may find you on the receiving end of your boss’s not so sweet temper. You may even have to endure the scene when his wife comes storming in to find out what is going on. This may lead to more upset for you when she demands that you tell her everything and refuses to believe you when you say you have no idea what she is talking about!
3. “I’d like to leave early because I’m bored”. Bosses don’t seem to understand that our jobs can be very boring and that there are lots of things we would rather be doing. They think that we should be thankful for our job and thoroughly enjoy it!
4. “I’m late because I knew I had nothing to do this morning”. Bosses seem to think that we should be busy the whole time. They even think that if we have nothing to do this means we may not be necessary to the workplace!
5. “Is that a bald spot on the back of your head?” For some reason bosses don’t like us pointing out their shortcomings. Especially if the boss is at that awkward age – anything from 20 to 70 years old. Personal comments are best kept for laughing at with your mates round the water cooler.
6. “That client wanted to place a huge order but he was so annoying I hung up on him”. Bosses often tell us to act on our own initiative but then get angry when we do!
7. “I’d like tomorrow off because our competitors have offered me a job”. Bosses don’t want to see us getting on and making something of our lives so it is probably best if you don’t mention the job interview. Just wait until the day and ring in sick.
8. “I Parked in your space because you were late”. Bosses seem to think that they are the only ones who can park near to the office. For some reason they don’t like to share and until they have been properly trained it is best not to upset them.
9. “Sales figures are down and if you give me a raise I will try to work a bit harder”. Strangely, bosses don’t see the logic of this. They think that if their profits are down we should work harder without getting extra pay!
10. “I didn’t answer my phone at the weekend because I knew it was you”. Bosses can’t seem to get used to the idea that the weekend is our time off and sometimes they have to be trained to accept this. During the training it is advisable to keep these observations to yourself as they may upset the boss!
