A Look Into Policing in a Small Town

There are many ways to become a Police officer. This depends on where the police department is and how the area is on which the officers will serve. In the following you will see the procedures for recruiting police officer in my area, the way that these officers are selected and the way that the chosen officers are trained.

Career Exploration into Policing

I live in a very small town of about 1400 people. We only have three officers and a police chief. In my town there is not much recruitment done. We have a town council and this has a big impact on who gets hired for an officer position. The officers that we have right now are ones that have been here for a long time. There is not much change. So, I would say that if a person is interested in becoming an officer then the town council would end up discussing.

The officers that work in my town are ones that everyone knows. The town council agreed on these men becoming officers in my town. The town that I live in is small and a place that everyone knows everyone. This is the same for the police in my town.

Since I come from a small town where the police department is very small, the training of an officer is what they call here a ride along. The officer must have gone through the police academy and then the officer is showed the ropes on how to do their job in this town. Another officer does the training and shows the new officer the town and how to perform patrols and so forth.
