All in a Day’s Work
“For them work is a living hell because their job connections drive them crazy.”
Everybody has to work. And the vast majority of us have to work under someone else’s direction. A lot has been written about “leadership” – but in truth most of us are followers. Someone is always in charge ahead of us, from whom we take our lead. Only a select few are in the “ultimate” leadership position, a role I personally would not relish. And because someone else always has some influence over us we cannot control everything that happens to us.

Not much has been written about the workplace and how it contributes to the well-being of the worker and determines whether a person experiences fulfillment. Practices, behaviors, attitudes and systems in the environment undermine the well-being and spirit of workers to such an extent that they can destroy homes, hopes, and happiness. Whatever happens at work can affect not only the worker but his or her spouse, children, and even the pets!

Why is the influence of the workplace so profound? The answer is simple: we spend between forty and seventy hours a week (or even more) for forty to fifty years of our life working. This is a big chunk of our existence; anything that takes that much of our life is bound to have a major influence on how we experience living. If what goes on in the workplace is crazy-making it will tend to make us a little kooky also.

The workplace can be very damaging, especially if there is no praise or recognition of your achievement.

work is work, but people need to have a life outside of it. I pity those who make their work their lives. They get devastated to the point of suicide when they lose their job.
