Casually Dressed at Work

How people dress casually these days and what is expected.

For the most part dressing casually at the work place is not just about choosing a pair of jeans and a pair of sandals. It is about knowing how to match dress wear to fit a casual occasion and it is about being in style if you are conscious of where you are going, who you have to meet and the image you want to project. Many places don’t require any sense of combining your clothes, just as long as you are dressed and those are more like to be art or media centers as opposed to a law firm. There are different ways that people see casual dress based on the the work place that they are at.

Casual usually means denims and a T-shirt but it has been recently broadened to include knickers, slacks and design T-shirts, tank tops, sandals and flip-flops. Women will wear blouses and jeans as opposed to a suit or matching vest and slacks and guys will aslo mix and match as opposed to wearing three piece suits with a matching shirt and tie which is considered formal. People generally have an image of what is formal and so anything that deviates from this these days is in a sense casual.

If a guy has difficulty choosing a mix of clothing on dress down day, when he can dispense with formal wear at the job place, than he could take a look at some store windows in trendy stores such at Gap or Garage. You don’t need a lot of money by buying designer stuff. There are plenty of good imitations, so a person could get a look at what is there and then shop at a more accessible store.

The tea shirt can be worn over the pants, especially if not at a work place where it is required to tuck your shirt in. I like the blend of dark t-shirts with matching motif  that is not too loud over a pair of pressed slacks and a pair of moccasin type shoes. If I want to go more formal I will substitute the t-shirt for a tapered lined shirt that is open at the neck and with flaps worn over the pockets. However dressing formally might mean that the person will have to tuck his shirt in.

Matching clothes takes some common sense especially if the person cares about his image so correct colour combination helps and if the person is color blind he might want to ask for some advise. Things that I do not recommend for the workplace are flip flops which would show the bottom of your feet as you walk in a place of business and could be frowned on, low necklines for ladies which would reveal more than what they would like their colleagues to see and torn or shabby wear which is not representative of how the company would like the individual to appear.

This boils down to following a dress code that most bigger businesses have and the employee can ask what he can or cannot wear without experimenting and finding out the hard way. The personnel will explain why certain clothes are not recommended, like flip flops which also leave the person’s foot unprotected from bumps and may reveal an ugly set of toe nails. Similarly wearing a decent neckline will not invite coworkers to ogle at cleavages and could therefore minimize issues dealing with harassment at the work place. Very short skirts may be banned entirely in a dress code that does not want its male employees to be looking up  female legs every time she sits down to see her butt or crotch.
