Choosing a Career Path – Seeking Help From a Business Professional

Finding a job may be difficult for college graduates who procrastinated in making plans for employment. If they were undecided on a major, it could even be more difficult. That is why it is important for college students to have a mentor who can help them develop their careers.

Much can be learned from a person such as this.  Spending time with them and asking questions about their work and how they gained their knowledge will help to understand how one prospers.  Developing a close relationship will greatly assist in emulating their good habits and sound business principles.

This person could be a member of your family or a member of the community.  Either way, choose someone who is well-versed in sound business principles or has expertise in his field of study.   The Oxford dictionary defines a mentor as someone who is a trusted advisor.  Because this person is an expert in their field, they give the young person qualities of shrewdness, cleverness, or sophistication.

A mentor will make a young man or woman clever or astute in his field.  Regarding money matters, the mentor will share his/her knowledge and methods of wise money management with the young tyro.  A young man or woman who desires to know more about managing money according to sound financial principles shows that he/she is committed to being successful.

Having a mentor during one’s career or profession can prove to be invaluable.  They can offer guidance and assistance in a myriad of business professional decisions.  Because they have followed the same steps, they can offer advice and even share some of the mistakes they made when they were developing their careers.

I apprenticed with my uncle when I was learning watercolor painting a number of years ago.  I learned the technique from him and then developed my own style from the lessons he gave me.  Having been an artist since the age of sixteen, there were times when he needed money to support his family.  He told me many stories of how he created jewelry designs for different jewelry factories in the area and was able to raise money.

Additionally, I watched him restore paintings and remove stains from antique etchings which he collected.  He removed the stains with a compound that he had invented in his kitchen.  I was amazed at how he would mix the compound in the kitchen sink and immerse the etching into it.  The etching would be floating in the water and after a time, the stains would be removed.  He would then hang the etchings up to dry and then locate a buyer for them.

Some students may work with a mentor, but they may not follow everything that the mentor recommends.  In this way, it would be a waste of time, because he/she does not understand the value of the relationship.  The student is better off exploring his/her own employment possibilities.
