Dealing with a Job Layoff
Have you been hearing rumblings of a layoff at your work? It’s been happening to a lot of people recently, and you should be prepared.
Let’s face it. Layoffs are a reality in most people’s lives, especially in this economic climate. This doesn’t mean you can’t be prepared for the worst and hope for the best though. I’ve put together some things you should do in the unfortunate event you experience a layoff or think it may be in your future.
First: You’ll usually hear something going around the office about layoffs. Bosses may hint at it and it’s perfectly fine for you to go to your boss and ask him or her about this. Finding out about a layoff before it happens can better prepare for when it actually does.
Second: If you know for sure that you will be let go or that there will be any layoffs at all, start your job search immediately. Even if you’re not sure if you are one of the employees to be let go, it’s important to start your job search. Post your resume and websites like workopolis.com, monster.ca and browse other sites like craigslist.
Third: Ask and look into whether or not you have the right to a severance package. Some companies have this option, while others do not.
Fourth: If you lose your job, file for unemployment insurance immediately. In my experience applying for this and actually getting any payments takes at least weeks in the best of times, so don’t wait. You can have unemployment insurance and your severance pay at the same time. So remember, even if you get a severance package and think you’re going to be fine, don’t wait. Apply for that unemployment insurance right away.
Fifth: Network and be a go-getter. Be aggresive when searching for that new job. The job market is very competitive right now. Go to free seminars and workshops to not only network, but enhance your skills. Talk to different people you run into during the day and ask them about their jobs and whether or not there are any positions available.
