Employee Quicksand: How Do You Work with That Hard to Work with Boss?

How do you deal with a stressful working relationship with your boss or manager?

 

Do you feel that you are sinking in quicksand with your boss or supervisor because you can’t seem to get along with them in your working relationship?  Do you feel you are trying your best with work and it is just never good enough for them?  Basically, you feel as if you are living vicariously your own episode of  The Apprentice and waiting for your manager to say Donald Trump’s catch phrase, “You’re fired!” I think people can relate to what I’m saying of working  with or for someone that controls your career or financial fate. Whether  it is personal, professional or the good ole fashioned green-eyed monster  of jealousy, you have a stressful,  and tense relationship with your boss, manager, or supervisor.   It seems that they are constantly knit picking, criticizing, and making you do unnecessary work,  or nasty in their disposition.  Then there are instances, when you feel they are working against you and not with you for you to fall flat on your face.

On MTV’s  reality tv show, The City, Season 2, this type of working relationship is illustrated to the tee with Erin Kaplan, Director of Public Relations, Elle Magazine and Olivia Palermo,  New York socialite, and Accessories Editor for Elle.  The City, is a spinoff show from the Hills and it tells the story of Whitney Port and others in the New York City Fashion Industry.   Erin is supposed to be showing  Olivia the ropes of Elle, but Olivia does not follow her instructions fully or disregards them completely.  Erin has caught on to this behavior and inevitably let’s her hang herself with her assignments, when it comes to reporting back to Creative Director, Joe Zee.   You can see the tension in their relationship, when it comes to photo shoots, pr  events and social gatherings.

So, what do you do if you have a less than favorable working relationship with your boss?  Do you stick it out or suck it up in terms of this is where you spend a third or more of your day?  First, you have to decide for yourself if putting up with the given situation at hand is worth it.  Many factors come into play, i.e., the present state of the economy, your family, job market, etc .  Despite what you choose to do, here are  six  tips to help you get through the unpleasantness of the situation:
