Getting the Job You Want 2

Getting that dream job is much easier than you think. These guidelines will help ensure that you stand out from the crowd and get the job you’ve always wanted. I’ll walk you through everything from the application process to the interview. Of course, it’s up to you in the end, but hopefully this guide gives you the leg up that will land you the job.

Note: This is part two of two in the series. Part one is about the application process and everything up to the actual face to face interview.

Congratulations on making it this far! This is your big chance to show them who you are, and why they need you working for their company and not their competitor. There are a couple of things you can do to give them no chance but to hire you.

If You Aren’t Sure, Dress Up

One of the most uncomfortable feelings is walking into an office and realizing you didn’t dress formally enough. If you aren’t sure what to expect, it is always better to dress up too much than not enough.

Get There Early

Showing up late to the interview is the last thing you want to do. It will make your boss think you don’t care, aren’t reliable, and that this would be something they could expect from you if you were to be hired. If you show up late to the interview, what can they expect of you if you actually work there?
Tip: Plan on arriving ten to fifteen minutes early. Chances are you’re headed somewhere you have never been before, so allow yourself time to get lost and stuck in traffic. You’ll need time to find parking, find the building, find the right office, etc. Bottom line – leave much earlier than you think you should.

Be Friendly, Introduce Yourself

Make friends with the secretary; get a feel for the atmosphere while you are waiting. Is it relaxed? Formal? Do people joke around or is everybody serious? It will also help break the ice when your interview comes out to meet you, and if the interviewer asks the secretary what they thought about you they’ll be able to say how nice and friendly and polite you were!

Mind Your Manners

When the interviewer walks in the room, stand up and greet them with a firm handshake. Use “yes sir/mam” and “no sir/mam” unless they give you something else to call them. Sit up straight, say please and thank you, “yes” instead of “yeah,” etc. Just simply remember everything your mother taught you.

Be Confident

Look the interviewer in the eye instead of the floor. Don’t knock your abilities, beat yourself up, or downgrade your accomplishments. Talk yourself up. Too many times people downplay the things they’ve done because they think it makes it sound like it was easy for a person with their talents. In reality, the interviewer is thinking the task was just a lot easier than it sounded on your resume.
Tip: People hate cocky, so don’t act like you are the second coming of the Messiah. You can be humble while still exuding the confidence you want the interviewer to get from you.

Above All, Just Be Yourself

All of these tips are good guidelines, but in the end you just need to come across as a genuinely good, hardworking person. If you took the initiative to look up tips for interviewing, I’m sure you’ll have no problems impressing the person! Smile, be happy, be excited – interviewers go through a lot of boring people, so give them a personality to remember!
