Graduate Jobs at an All Time Low

A bleak reminder of how the recession affects all areas of society.

There used to be a time when a student couldn’t walk down the street without being bombarded with such abuse as “Get off your a-*e you lazy student layabout” or, the famous one “Go and get a job!” These are the main phrases which surround a student as he/she staggers through the three to five years of their course. It is these phrases which are now slowly drifting out due to their not being any jobs for a student to have. I’m lucky, I’ve got my final year to come in September, and so can drift along with a humble bar job until I reach the mirky depths of the end of my course; which obviously is slightly daunting. Unlike some of my silver spoon fed counterparts, though, I’ve had to work before university and after, and the future prospect is, that when I finish, unlike when I started, won’t have a job. Anyway, I suppose this prospect is a year way, but this unfortunately isn’t the case for around 80,000 students around the United Kingdom, who are sitting at home with their thousands of pounds worth of books, thinking “Was it all worth it?” I, genuinelly, still believe it is, and therefore if a student has to resort to going on jobs seekers allowance, they can hold their heads high and know they’ve spent five years doing a course they enjoyed, and one they’ve obviously excelled at! I just hope that when the market does clear up, employers will look at the students degree, in comparison to the months they’ve had off looking for a job. Good luck to all students who’ve graduated in 2009!
