How Do I Sell That?

Working in Sales is a very difficult job. You either have a knack for it or you don’t. Even if you don’t have a knack for selling, you can learn how to become a better at it. It’s simple and easy.

Okay, so you just got a job at some department store, jewelery store, or other type of store where you interact with customers to get them to buy things, and you have no idea what you’re doing. Especially if you get paid comimssion on everything you sell, plus what you make per hour. The more you sell, the more money you make, and the more recognition you get from your superiors. Selling more could get you a raise or a promotion, too.  So why not try to work on it? Here are some simple tips that can help anyone sell just about anything!

Know Your Product

Okay, so this isn’t going to be the easiest thing in the world to do. You’ll have to study everything that comes into the store a little bit. For example, let’s say you worked in jewlery and someone asked you what kind of stone is in a ring. You look at the ring and don’t know what the stone is, don’t say, “I don’t know.” If you knew your product you would be able to say, “It’s a Ruby, I’m sure of it!” Also, if you’re working in a clothing store, knowing what’s there is a good thing. Then a customer could pick out a shirt, and you can say, ”I know something that would go perfect with that!” You pull out what you think would look good, and you never know, you might have just made a sale! If you know what’s in the store you’re working it, it will make your life better and you’re sales go up, up, up!

Dress For the Job

When you’re in sales, you don’t want to look like a slob.  Also, people have a tendencynot to take people who don’t dress nicely.  So ladies, dress in khakis, black pants, skirts, dresses, and nice tops.  Ladies, also remember not too much cleavage, you don’t want people looking at your chest when you’re trying to sell something.  Men, dress in a nice shirt and dress pants.  If your job calls for it, a tie and a suit jacket.

Be Courteous

“You look ugly today, mam.  Can I interest you in some make-up?”  You definitely don’t say this to someone!! Instead say something like, “You look very nice today, mam.  Can I interest you in some make- up?”  Be flattering to potential customers, don’t be rude because once you decide to be mean, you lose the sale.  Also, always remember your manners.  It just makes you look better as a person, and it reflects the store you work for.

Never Show more than Three Items at one Time

In a nutshell, showing more than three items to a customer at one time could confuse them.  People in general don’t like to be confused, especially when about to buy something.  The trick is find out what your customer is looking for and figure out their price range.  Remember to be courteous!!  So, if they don’t tell you what their price range is, pick out three items from low, medium, and high priced items.  The customer then will chose their price range, and you can either show them more items in that price range, or close the sale.

Get to Know your Customer

This is probably the most important step- you see, I saved the best for last!  If you don’t get to know your customer before and while showing them products.  Just start talking to them about any safe subject- this does not include religion,  politics, or any other controversial subject.  Safe subjects are the weather, if there is a holiday going on the holiday, sports, or a current event that would not lead to an argument.  If an argument should arise, just agree with a customer and keep your head.  A lot of times good conversation comes from the simplest topics.  If you get to know your customer they will feel more confident and more likely to buy a product from you.

This is great advice and well written (and enjoyable — haha — “You look ugly today ma’am”). :-) I’ll have to remember to stop using that line. Nicely done!

Alexa, you have given some great advice here. I worked in retail for about 10 years and have to agree with you. While working in Sears Brand Central I learned that placing the item in the customer’s hand and showing them how to use it helped sell it because they become enamored with it. They thought about this item before they came into the store. Then they play with it and do not want to hand it back. So your are right, know your product. When you demonstrate the item, it sells itself.
