How to be a Better Co-worker

There’s nothing worse at the office than an annoying co-worker. Almost anyone whose ever worked in an office has encountered at least one in their career. It makes the work day miserable. It’s important to learn what not to do in order to ensure that you never become the annoying co-worker.

  1. Don’t gossip! This is hands down, the most annoying thing to have going on in the office. And, by gossiping about others, especially other co-workers, people will expect you to gossip about them as well, thus diminishing any trust they would have in you. Besides, nobody wants to listen to the pestering sound of spsss, spsss, spsss whispering!
  2. Keep your voice down. Think of the office as a library. Only the person you’re speaking to needs to hear your conversation. If the person down the hall can hear it, you’re speaking too loudly. If need be, close your door when conducting phone or face to face conversations. You don’t want other people to overhear a confidential conversation.
  3. Keep your personal phone calls, emails and texting to a minimum. How many times have you heard a fellow employee complain about her workload only to find her texting her boyfriend or on the phone for long periods of time with her family? Then, the others in the office are left to pick up the slack and eventually come to resent the person causing all the extra work. You don’t want to be this person.
  4. Keep perfume and other scents at a minimum. Believe it or not, there are many people that are allergic to perfumes. It can cause them to suffer migraines, and other unpleasant symptoms. So, if you absolutely must wear cologne or perfume, keep it at a minimum. It’s the respectful thing to do.
  5. Don’t bring foods with offensive odors, like fish, into the office. However good it might taste to you, other people don’t want to smell it.
  6. Clean up after yourself. When utilizing shared area’s such as bathrooms and kitchens, be sure to always clean up after yourself. Remember, you are not at home and no one at work should be forced to clean up after you. Besides, you don’t want to clean up after anyone else, either. Don’t leave containers in the refrigerator for more than a couple of days and don’t help yourself to other’s condiments and drinks without prior consent to do so.

  7. Return borrowed items. If you borrow an item, be sure to return it immediately and in the same condition in which you found it. If you damage an item, no matter how old or new it may be, you should replace it.

  8. Take proper care when using office equipment. Don’t leave papers all over the printer or copier after you’ve used it. If a piece of office equipment should need repair, consult the proper person immediately. Don’t leave it for another person to find and repair.
