How to Beat the Back-to-Work Blues

Dreading the thought of Monday morning again? Why is it that it seems to come round quicker than the speed of light? It’s not something we can avoid but there may be ways of easing ourselves into it.

I love that Friday feeling. However, before you know it, you’ll be experiencing that Monday morning feeling again. That feeling of gloom. That feeling of Where’s the weekend gone? always enters your head. It usually seems to be on a Sunday night too. How is that fair? The Monday morning feeling creeps into the last bit of your weekend, your last little piece of freedom.

If you’re like me, you’ll feel that all you seem to live for is counting the days on your calendar until your next chunk of time off. This shouldn’t be the case. Try to enhance your mood by following some simple steps…..

Keep telling yourself that it’s just a day job. It’s not who or what you are but just simply something that you do. It doesn’t define you as an individual. If it’s just a tempoarary fill-in job until you figure out what it is exactly that you want to do in life then keep chanting it’s only temporary to yourself on a constant daily, if not hourly basis. Use this as your mantra if it works.

Try to be positive. A positive mental attitude may seem like something which is easier said than done but if you’re constantly re-assuring yourself, it’s bound to work over time. It helps to remain focused on something good about your day, even if it’s something small. For example, if you are in the middle of a captivating book, think about that next chapter you will become engaged in on your lunch break.

Think about what plans you may have for the evening ahead. Even if it may be something which some may consider insignificant, it will probably be significant to you. By concentrating on your night’s activities, you will find yourself in a happier frame of mind, with a much needed smile on your face.

Try not to surround yourself with negative people. Pessimism is not a trait which will encourage you to feel better about your day. Sometimes, it helps for you to know that someone else is feeling the same way as you do but most of the time, it just brings you down. It then becomes more difficult to pick yourself up.

Be more organised with aspects of your personal life. If you are a well organised person in your job, become more organised at home. You may not always feel like it but by putting more effort into what’s more important in life, you will feel as though you’ve reached a personal sense of achievement.

Take up a hobby or find something that you’re passionate about. By filling your personal life with meaning, your professional life will seem less empty. It will also support the feeling that your life doesn’t just consist of work. Try to stick at your extra-curricular activity. If it really isn’t working out for you then don’t suffer with it, just try to give it a chance. If you quit too easily, this will end up making you feel less motivated at trying new things. You may even treat it as a failure, eventually making you give up completely and landing you back at square one, stuck in a rut.

Inevitably, we all face days where we just don’t want to go into work but hopefully, by trying some simple ways to effectively change our disposition, we can face a brighter day.
