How to Become a Gunsmith

A brief guide to become a successful gunsmith.

A gunsmith is an individual who crafts, repairs, maintains, sells and also remodels such firearms like guns. Gunsmiths gain their skills and experience either through informal apprenticeship or by attending trade school or college for formal training. Here are some guidelines on how to become a gunsmith.

Individuals who want to become gunsmiths should first conduct the necessary research to ascertain what the profession entails. An individual keen on becoming a gun smith should understand gunsmithing core aspects for instance, grip, balance and sights. For this reason, individuals should enroll for such specialized courses as general machining. They should learn about metallurgy, ballistics and processes related to machine tools. To become a gunsmith, an individual is required to draw from skills that they may already have. In addition to skills and experience in metal work, individuals should love weaponry.

Subsequently an individual should seek formal education. This involves attending a gun smith college or school that is accredited. The schools either offer diplomas or degrees. In order to qualify as a gunsmith, an individual is required to have completed 8000 hours of theoretical classroom instruction as well as practical on-the-job related training. While formal training is necessary, it only provides individuals with the theoretical bit. Consequently, on completion of training, apprenticeship comes highly recommended as it provides individuals with the much needed hands on experience.

Individuals may opt to go at it alone or seek employment at an already established gun store. However, before going into employment, individuals should supplement their education with work related experience. In order to gain experience, individuals should work under already established professional gunsmiths. Professional gunsmiths have in the game longer and possess a wealth of gunsmithing knowledge and experience. Accordingly, they are best placed to teach novices important tricks of the trade that are not taught in gun smith school.

There are laws related to the use and handling of firearms which vary from state to state. Accordingly, individuals wishing to practice gun smithing are required to obtain a Federal Firearms License (FFL) from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive. At this point, an individual may then seek employment. Often times, gunsmiths are employed in gun shops and stores, firearms distributors plus manufacturers as well as armories. It is crucial that a gunsmith performs their job with the seriousness it deserves. A mistake on their part could be costly, causing injuries or even death to innocent people.
