How to Become a Health Inspector

Many people suppose that a heath inspector has the sole duty of checking eating facilities to ensure that their environments are hygienic and safe as stipulated by the national and local laws. However, it should be noted that health inspection entails many careers and none of them has the same requirements for an entrant. A health inspector may specialize in housing units, nursing homes or even care centers.
An interested person may not have the knowledge on how to become a health inspector. The first step for such a person to take would be to do a research so as to have the information about the availability of health inspection training programs, whether by visiting one’s local offices or through the internet. One should obtain information such as the duration of the program, accreditation and the entry requirements. One should then make a decision on whether he or she wants a degree or a certificate in health inspection. Inspection jobs are of late requiring one to have a degree in public health and safety, environmental health or health administration.
There are however those that become health inspectors with a high school diploma and on the job training. They may be required to take exams after the training so as to get certification. A health inspector should have good skills in communication as he or she will be required to write reports on what he or she finds. Therefore, interested people should perform well in English or any other language of communication in their locality.
The third step would be to apply and register for a program which fits best one’s financial or time needs. Depending on the education level one wants to achieve, one should be prepared to take up to six years in the program. One should ensure that he or she graduates in the program with the highest honors. Before or immediately one gradates, he or she should work as an intern in a public health department in the locality. This is important as it gives a person the necessary experience and also sharpens one’s skills.
One should scrutinize different accreditation organizations from where one can sit for a test and then receive a certificate. In the United States, one can approach organizations such as America Board of Industrial Hygiene or Board of Certified Safety Professionals. It is important for one to obtain accreditation from different organizations as this makes one marketable in the career. One should also apply for jobs in health departments in his or her locality.
