Choosing a career is a decision that will have lasting consequences for your life. This will be something that you will likely be investing a lot of your time and energy. You career might eat up most of your time until you retire; if you ever retire. A bad move would be to choose a career that you are not sure about, and then realize ten or twenty years down the line that you completely hate your job. How to choose a career is important and you would be wise to spend some time considering it rather than just falling into something.
The first step in how to choose a career is examining where you are now and what you will likely be able to accomplish in the future. If you hate studying and you don’t have any qualifications then a job like teaching would be best left alone. Don’t be unfair to yourself though, you can accomplish a lot if you are willing to put the effort into it. Write down a list of all the careers you would consider and shortlist this down to about twenty; you can get ideas from the internet or talking with friends. Next match these careers with your qualifications and your likely future qualifications. As well as the job itself, you need to take into consideration all that you want from life. It would not work well if you chose a career that involves years of training, but you feel determined to go travelling the world while still in your late teens. How to choose a career should involve consideration into wants, abilities, and resources.
It may happen that you have the ability and the desire for a certain career, but you don’t have the finances. Maybe you decide that you are desperate to go to medical school, but don’t have the resources to finance this. In that case it might be a case of beginning in one job in order to later finance your entry into another one. This isn’t always a bad thing as experience is never wasted.
You will hear plenty of advice in regard to how to choose a career, but at the end of the day only you can make the decision; this seems fair enough as it will be you who lives with the consequences.
