How to Choose Your Goal

by LeiraOlecra in Work, May 11, 2008

Planning your goal and decision making affects the outcome of your entire working life. Sometimes it is hard to make these decisions without proper guidance and counsel. This will help you establish your path to success.

Decide on the career you want. Here is a handy checklist just to get you thinking and check one that has the greatest appeal.

  • Journalism Mechanics Accounting Office Work Art Natural Sciences
  • Outdoor Engineering Business Production PR Development
  • Advertising Commerce Products Beauty Law Manufacturing

This of course is not the complete list but once you have decided on a particular field, be sure that is exactly what you want and not because your parents asked you to choose that one.

For example in the very broad field of engineering, what nature of work would you like to concentrate; chemical, civil, electrical, industrial or mechanical? If you select art, what please you most; commercial, advertising, cartoon, illustrating or someone behind the scene?

Consider every possibility carefully and do not rush. Take all the time because this is an important decision for you to make. Any single mistake can be fatal to your career and to you as a person. But once you have decided the best career – then time to go to the best roads leading to your goal.

There are actually two starting points. The first one is outside the field you would like to get into. Say you are a flight attendant now and want to get into advertising then you are faced with the problem of breaking into a completely new field.

It is far different if you are a store clerk now and wants to have your very own supermarket – you can by-pass the breaking in point because you are already in that field. The primary concern is to prepare for advancement.

In either case – the problem is fundamentally the same. You have to qualify for admission to your chosen field or for advancement within that field. Consider the fact – an advertising agency cannot use a flight attendant to promote a product not related to her present career. A store clerk by himself cannot easily establish a business, own, run and operate it.

The only solution to the problem is lies on proper training. It takes more than a solid plan and a burning desire to get where you want to go. It takes more than the abilities, skills and technical know how. How are you going to acquire these skills and abilities? It is through training – proper training.

You have to be ready with the special training to get you to your goal. You can attend a technical school that offers subject relevant to your chosen career. Do not expect that you will be able to complete a program of self-improvement in just one jump. Take it one at a time, step by step, by different stages. Set a time table then work for it and complete it.

When you are ready – set your final goal and make your plan to make your dream come true. To make your goal achieved. Follow your plan closely and soon you will get there just the way you wanted it to be.
