How to Find The Right Job for You
Tips and reminders for employment seekers.
Job hunting can be a daunting task especially these days. Finding the right job is hard, especially if you are looking for your first real job or you’ve lost a job after many years and are having to adjust to the idea of completely different career path as the economy and, seemingly, the entire world shifts.
Here are a few tips and reminders to speed you on your way.
Know thyself.
A job is a long-term commitment. Know what your interests are. Sometimes abilities and interests don’t match well. For example, you may have the skills and education to be an engineer, but the work makes you unhappy. Or, you may have all of the education and background to work in the corporate environment, but you’re just not happy doing it.
Look for work that makes you happy and don’t consider the kind of work environment you’re going into. Sometimes it is better to work for a smaller company than a big corporation. Don’t get stuck thinking that you have to do something that you really don’t want to do.
Take an online career assessment test.
If you’re completely clueless about what kind of work you are suited to, try a free online assessment test such as the one provided by Quest Career. An internet search will turn up many results. Many college career centers offer such tests, too.
Look Around
What kinds of jobs do people around you have? Don’t be afraid to ask people you know about what they do and what kind of income you might expect doing such work. When you see people who seem satisfied with their work or who are doing work that you might be interested in, ask them about it.
What motivates and inspires you?
If you are at a crossroads, this might be a good time to assess what you really enjoy doing? What would you do even if you weren’t getting paid to do it? Maybe now is the time to consider that career as a writer or an artist that you always dreamed of.
Also, consider how motivated you are by money. For some people it is important to their egos or their security to make a lot of money. Other people are satisfied if they can just pay the bills.
Consider becoming an entrepreneur.
Sometimes it is best to make your own job. In fact, most of the employers in the U.S. are small businesses and entrepreneurs. Home businesses are a booming industry. Consider developing a product or helping someone else sell theirs. The internet has presented more opportunities for such commerce than ever existed before.
Be flexible.
Be prepared to try new things. But, don’t stick around if you are unhappy or uncomfortable in a new job. Some times the culture at a particular company just isn’t going to be for you and you have to find something that fits.
Most of all, get a take charge attitude – take control of your own destiny. Be prepared for opportunities that you had not considered before.
