How to Get Promoted: Part 2

Want to get promoted? Tired of getting passed over? These tools can help you get promoted fast! This article is part of a series, so be sure to read the entire series to get all the tools! (Many of these tools are great if you are in business for yourself too).

Learn rapport building skills.  Being able to connect with others quickly, and at a deeper level, can do wonders for your career. The “Likability Factor” plays a major role in your success. The good news is you can learn these skills. There’re several good books and CDs out there to help you and are inexpensive for the gains they will help you make.

Do favors for people. Nothing sincerely endears you to someone as much is doing them a favor, and typically, they will more than pay you back. While most people are trying to avoid doing other people favors, I seek out opportunities to do favors for others. I listen to them and then try to think of ways in which I can help. People greatly appreciate even the tiniest of favors, like picking up their mail when you grab yours and handing it to them, thereby saving them a trip. This takes just 2 seconds, but it is very thoughtful, and that is huge in relationship building.

Be positive and upbeat. The average person is either flat emotionally or is negative. If you are openly positive, friendly and upbeat, you will stand out from at least 95% of staff at most companies. Think about this too, would you promote a negative person on your team? Of course not, especially for a leadership position (where the most money is). Look at it backwards. Do everything right, but be negative at work, and you probably aren’t going anywhere, right?

Share the credit generously. Most people try to hog the credit, and how are they seen? As hogs! Do others ever want to help this “hog” ever again? No, and many will actually attack or sabotage this person. Instead, share the credit as generously as possible, even if some of the people you credit don’t fully deserve it. Why? There are several good reasons. First, everyone you give credit to will be very pleased with you, may befriend you, will help you in the future, and may even protect you from others. Second, your boss will see you sharing credit as a powerful leadership skill and it demonstrates that you are a true “team player.” Also, your boss will likely see you as being overly generous and humble, and will give you the same amount of credit, or more, than if you tried to “hog” it. Third, if you share credit, it will come up in conversation more, each time you complement another person, you are seen in a positive light.
