How to Get Your Work Groove Back

When packing it in is not an option, there are ways to get your groove back so that you can be enthusiastic and productive again on the job.

The job that feeds, houses and clothes you can feel like an albatross around your neck. But until the dream job materializes or you cash in on your dream life, the following advice can help you get your work groove back.

Remember the early days

The daily grind can suck your enthusiasm, leaving you disenchanted and hungering for a premature vacation. But thoughts of the good old days can replace the ho-hum of your work day with renewed fervour.

Do you recall the first interview, the call that you been selected for the position, the first day, finally getting the hang of your duties and the pride you felt when you no longer needed supervision on a daily basis?

Revive those early memories and begin facing each work day with a little more enthusiasm.

Forget past failures

Everyone makes mistakes but if you hold on to the memory of errors you made on the job in the past, you risk not being able to function at your best in the present.

If your boss has forgiven you and proved it by trusting you with new and greater responsibilities, you must forgive yourself.

Throw off the burden of past mistakes and bounce back into the efficient and capable employee you are.

Give up control

From senior personnel to ground-level workers, some employees can be territorial about their assigned responsibilities and dismissive of contributions from their colleagues.

Is your day overshadowed by your controlling attitude? Do you insist that your employees, co-workers and subordinates acquiesce to your ideas without question or input?
You can’t do it all. Give the people who work with you and for you a chance to make contributions. Give up control and you will gain respect, and ease the pressure you’re been putting on yourself. Moreover, you will provide the atmosphere for people you work with to share responsibilities and the satisfaction and benefits of work well-done.

Take control

Maybe you have been on the receiving end of a controlling boss, supervisor or co-worker. Maybe your opinions and ideas have been brushed aside and you have been sidelined for one reason or another.

Don’t settle for compliance and an oblivious attitude. Without being aggressive or disruptive, take control of your career. Identify someone in the company you can talk to freely and honestly. Relay your feelings of being marginalized and your desire to make a meaningful contribution. Ask for solutions to the problem that is hindering your advancement, your self-confidence and enthusiasm for your job.
