I Hate My Job…..help!

Another complainer for Crabby Abby….Someone should pay me for this, really!

Dear Crabby Abby,

I have been working the same job for over 10 years. I hate the job, hate my boss and would love to leave. I find myself very depressed Monday mornings when I face another week. The job market in my city is tough right now. I’ve been actively looking for a few years, but there are many people in that boat too and I haven’t had any luck. I feel hopelessly stuck and helpless.

I would love to adjust my attitude somehow. I’m having a hard time finding a way to do that. I know I should be thankful to have a job with our present economy, but am having a hard time with the thankful part.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you…Marissa

Ok Marissa, (crybaby crenshaw)

Let’s think about some stuff here. The first thing that jumps out at me is that you are able to articulate your feelings in writing. Your letter is honest (for a pessimistic, ungrateful, complainer) and to the point. It’s well written. I don’t know what you do for a living or how busy you are doing it, but if you have some free time, (most everyone can find some…stop the online shopping) I would suggest that you do a bit of journaling about your feelings.

Often times there is humor in the darkness and writing about it can show us that. You need to lighten up here a bit.

You “hate” your job and you “hate” your boss. Whaa, whaa, whaa……Well, join the club, sugar. You seem to have a sense of entitlement….some feeling that makes you believe that you don’t deserve to be in a situation for over 10 years that you “hate”.

I hear you say you are trying to find other employment, but suggest that perhaps you look for things that you can do within your present employment to lessen your hatred. No point writing life off as a “hopeless” until you find your dream job. You may never find it. And, you’re right, some thankfulness would serve you well and give you some balance. Thankfulness is a choice. You choose to be that or choose not to. Time to pull up your big girl panties and decide to own your choice.

Why not start a blog about your job. Write about it everyday. Do remember that others at your office are nearby and may snoop on your computer when you’re not there. You have to FIND WAYS to make your life better and to make your time spent at your job work for you.

Stop being such a downer. Just plain stop it. You make your world what you want it to be. Being STUCK and employed is much better than being STUCK and unemployed. You can quit your job to test the truth of that statement or trust me on it. I suggest trusting me.

In the meantime, mentally change the first day of your week to Sunday and get lots of exercise and fresh air that day. Have a relaxing evening and get some good sleep. That will help you with Monday, the 2nd day of your week.

Chin up, chest out, LIVE YOUR LIFE by giving your focus to what you love instead of what you DON’T love.

If you’re feeling stuck, looking at things differently even if those “things” don’t change, goes a long way in unsticking you.
