Job Hunting Destroys Your Personality

The rant and rave of someone who’s been unemployed for a while…

Its a sad sad case actually….

I’ve been looking for a job for the past three months now. About a month ago I lined up an interview, with the help of an agency. The interview was only scheduled for later the day, so the lady at the agency in charge of my CV arranged that we meet for lunch. Just to give me some pointers to ace the interview, she said.

Now I know I am a hard worker, I’m honest and I have grey matter between my ears, and I know how to use it. I also know I’m not perfect and I don’t have a degree.

I know I am me… What she proposed during our business lunch, was the complete opposite. First I had to find out that she “doctored” my CV in order for it to appear more presentable. She omitted some of my jobs and also “filled out” the current information on my CV. Adding skills and tasks that was not relevant to my previous employments.

She told me to walk a certain way, to act a certain way and to say certain things. Look, I can understand that its important to appear more professional, or to “sound” better when looking for work. But really? Should I change my entire personality and outlook on life to just find a job?

If that is what the workplace requires of me, then I say screw them. I am who I am, I know my strengths and my weaknesses, and I know I can contribute to a company by being “me.”

Are the anybody else out there who feels the entire job hunting process is turning into a kind of secular prostitution?
