Little Known Recession-Proof Jobs

A overview of some recession proof jobs that are often overlooked.

Any recession brings in its wake job losses and economic upheavals.

Sectors like health care, teaching, security and sales are commonly touted are recession free jobs for the demand for such jobs exists irrespective of the economic outlook. This however is a misconception. To cite an example, with more people out of jobs, the people covered by health insurance is also likely to come down, which translates to lesser people being able to afford health care costs. Thus while basic health care professions like nursing may not be affected, others like psychotherapists might well feel the pinch.

There are however some sectors that remain relatively recession free, but are often overlooked when one first ponders over recession free jobs. Such jobs may not pay much, but the advantage is a steady flow of income irrespective of the economic outlook.

Tax consultants and auditors: Tax auditors usually have work regardless of the economic outlook, for a company or an individual once in the tax net would have to continue filing returns even if they do not need to pay taxes.

Policing: A career in the policing or other indispensable government function is unlikely to face downturns during recession. In fact, the workload for police might actually increase during times of recession, as unemployed people tend to resort to crimes and violent agitations.

Utilities: Demand for jobs in indispensable public utilities such as electricity supply, water supply and the like again is unlikely to come down during times of recession.

Sales: Although demand for products come down during times of recession, companies are unlikely to retrench their sales staff unless they go bankrupt, for it is the sales staff that brings in revenue to the company.

Some other careers such as those of debt-collectors and debt-managers, bankruptcy lawyers and others actually thrive during recession, as people need their services more during such times.
