Each year in the United States alone, people spend millions of dollars on their pets. The past few years has also seen a dramatic rise in the number of exotic pets, but most people still own a cat or a dog. Our family has two dogs and two cats ant they are all loved and well taken care of. Undoubtedly our pets are a part of the family. Every Christmas they get presents and all their birthdays are celebrated with much fanfare. Both our kids are quite loving towards the pets and help us in taking care of them. maybe this age is the best to see if you are made out for careers with animals!
Though both our daughter and son take good care of the pets, our daughter has a special way with them. she has always been interested with anything concerning the animals. When she was very young, her favorite channels were discovery and animal planet rather than the cartoons kids her age would watch. She always said that she was more interested in careers with animals. Anytime she had to make a research paper or presentation about planning her future, she would research about careers with animals. As she researched more and more on the subject, she kept changing her mind about what she wanted to do. I thought she would concentrate more on animal biology or zoology; but when she began looking at various universities, I saw that she was looking for schools that could offer her a veterinary degree. This is the most time consuming of all careers with animals but also the most rewarding in the long run.
Once she began her studies, she had to give it her hundred percent dedication. Veterinary sciences is a very difficult and competitive field to get into. I thought she would be interested in becoming a small animal veterinarian as those are the animals she was exposed to at home. So it really came as a surprise when she announced she was going to be a farm vet. There is a constant need for farm vets in the rural areas and she had applied for a fellowship to work a summer with a rural veterinarian clinic. She got the fellowship and set out to help the vet on farm calls and also in conducting surgeries at his office.
The vet also practiced small animal procedures so she got exposure to both these areas. She is absolutely in love with her job and is satisfied working with large animals. She sees herself working in her own clinic in a small rural area in the future. I am sure wherever she works, all the animals will be well taken care of. It is the best career with animals that she could choose.
