Looking for Work with All The Right Stuff

Tips and suggestions for your job search.

When you look for jobs and set realistic goals, chances are you will get what you want. Here are some helpful suggestions to remember as you plan to go out and land that job.

Have a road of map of where you want to be in 3 months, 6 months and in 1 year.
This is important because you have to know where you are in order to assess how much further you need to go to get where you want to be. If you want to interview with six potential employers every month then you have to set a goal that is realistic and will allow that to happen for you. Short term goals are always good because they help to keep you motivated and they are easy to evaluate or change if necessary.

Define your goals in terms of your capabilities
When you try to accomplish goals that you have no interest in accomplishing, there is no point in trying in the first place. Your goals should be your goals, not your family’s goals. They need to be realistic and of course focused on where you want to be although outside help and support are always important. If you do not have a particular qualification and expect to land a job that requires that qualification, you are setting yourself up for failure. When you define you goal in terms of your capabilities you help yourself to become a success. Maybe one goal might be to get training to increase your skill in a specific area so you can qualify for a particular job.

Revise your goals and plans as necessary
You should be flexible and take into account that you might need to revise your plans. You might need to make some adjustments as you go along. This is where it becomes important for you to know what you can do and what you are not willing to do.

Acknowledge progress and take time to celebrate the success that you will have along the way.
This does not necessarily mean throw a party every three months. Moreover, I am talking about take time to reflect on what you did correct and why it is working. You have to remember that people will not give you what you need unless you tell them what it is you need. To that end when you have a success, such as getting an interview or being a finalist in for a position, use that as a measure of what you can do. Use that as a measure of your skills. Take that accomplishment and use it to motivate yourself to get to the next level, which is of course getting the job you want.

This is just the beginning of an ongoing formula for success that can help you to get the job you want. If you have to take temporary job, take time to weigh all of the pros and cons before you agree to take the position. If you want to work in administration or human resource, are you willing to take a temporary job working the midnight shift stocking shelves? This is one of the tough questions you have to ask yourself as you make decisions about work. Although these are tough economic times, and it can seem as if you cannot find anything, try to find work that has transferable skills. Skills that you can use in more than one job description. Transferable skills can help you to keep your employment prospects strong because you can demonstrate that you have been doing comparable work while you were still looking for the job you want.

Take time to revitalize yourself
When you feel pressed for time and cannot think clearly about what needs to be done, it is easy to make mistakes. Take time to rejuvenate your spirit and energy. Treat yourself to something nice.

Things can get better and they will get better. One of the most important things to remember is to use your network of friends and contacts to help you get where you want to be. Remember that you do not have to get there on the first try. Just keep plugging at it and take it one situation at a time, one day at a time, one job search at a time.
