Meetings – a Practical Alternative to Work
Meetings can be the bane of our lives, particularly when you don’t understand half of what is being said around you. So, here are some practical ways to occupy yourself during these meetings, or perhaps we just have to accept that meetings are truly a practical alternative to work.
If world domination just isn’t your thing and you’d prefer a more relaxed lifestyle that the average criminal mastermind enjoys or you just can’t be bothered to perfect the perfect MWA-HA-HA, then perhaps you could try something a little different. A laid back approach to meetings can be just waiting for the inevitable snide comments that will come out during it and see how many you can catch. No matter how serious the meeting or how senior the members attending you can be almost certain that some will slip through the net. In addition this can prove quite a useful indication as to who it is considered socially acceptable to mock within your group.
As a final suggestion and depending on whether you want to take your life in your hands, a far more entertaining solution to keeping yourself amused and occupied during meetings is to spend the entire meeting making paper boats or other origami models. This may perhaps work best if you are known as an idiosyncratic member of the team, or of course if you have perfect recall abilities meaning that you can quote line for line if you are ever pulled up on your weird behaviour. This will further ensure that you won’t get pulled up again in the future, and you can even say it helps you concentrate. On the other hand, if you don’t have either of these excuses then no matter how amusing creating your own armada of boats to cover your place can be, this may well be a fairly quick way to find yourself on disciplinary.
At the very least meetings are a practical alternative to work and if worst comes to worst meaning that you have to pay attention in order to keep your eyes open, there are two things you should remember. Firstly, it can’t go on forever no matter how much it may seem like it. And secondly, it really can’t be much worse than being at your desk! At least in the meeting you have an excuse for glazing over…
And as an example of yet another rant written during a meeting about what was said during the meeting I leave you with this.

The evil cackle bit might just give it away. That, or the speaker might think you were taking the mick out of what they were saying, and if the speaker were your boss…

The best way is not to attend the meeting at all. LOL
