Moving to Canada with an LMO Work Permit
Considering moving to Canada. You may want to consider just applying for residency. Work permits are becoming harder these days to get approved. We know, Please read our story.
The main site where you can find lots of information on emigrating to Canada is www.cic.gc.ca. This site offers lots of information on ways to emigrate and the kind of people they are taking applications from at the time. In 2008 we looked at emigrating to Canada and the waiting time for the residency to be approved was looking at about 5 years. Five years is a long time if you have a family and therefore we looked at alternatives.
We contacted a Canadian lawyer firm, Which I would never use again. They charge a fortune and they lied to us too. They sold us their services offering us help and renewals if needed free of charge and then they started asking for extra money. We had no choice and between my family members we had to pay them an extra $7,500 on top of the $15,000 they already asked for.
If you can apply on your own, I would highly recommend it. Ill give you a little info on what we had to go through and hopefully if you are attempting to apply for a work permit it will give you some help at least.
First of all I just want you to know that around 150,000 people enter Canada each year as a foreign worker. Isn’t that amazing?
There is a list of job titles on the www.cic.gc.ca website that do not require work permits. IE Athlete’s, Coaches, business visitors, students working on campus etc.
Other than those listed as not needing a work permit, you will need to apply for one. However, It isn’t just as simple as applying for a permit to work. You must first of all have a job offer from a Canadian employer for a position you are qualified for. Usually trades for example such as carpenter, plumber, electrician etc.
Once you have a job offer the employer first of all has to apply to HRSDC for a Labour Market Opinion. This is usually referred too as an LMO. For the employer to apply they have to prove that they have advertised the job to Canadians for at least 2-3 weeks and show that non were successful for the position. For the application to be approved it also has to meet certain requirements, for example a minimum level of pay that can be offered. A lot of this information can be found through both the CIC website and also www.hrsdc.gc.ca.
