Overtime: A Way to Die

Is the pay worth the work rendered.

i have been working in the call center industry  for quite sometime now; have worked with three different call centers, each  with different work policies and compensation packages.

with the current employer i have, i can’t help but lament on the overtime we are rendering. sure we are getting overtime premiums but one can’t help this feeling i have when you are doing it everyday, rendering mandatory overtime for two hours a day, five times a  week for seven months now.

our account deals with customer service, 24/7.  i seemed to enjoy the game during my first year. although it’s not easy dealing with irate customers/drivers who experience vehicle breakdown at the middle of know where. but it is very fulfilling when you are appreciated if they can’t thank you enough for having them back on the road after locating service for their vehicle.

not all agents are able to deal with it, some have resigned from their work, some have just disappeared without saying anything. now there are a handful of us, working double time for the vacated slots.

and then the nightmare began.. we render this undending overtime, and much to our chagrin, breaks are delayed for at least 2 hours. we are even called in the middle of our sleep to be requested to report earlier than our usual shift.

but when payday comes, we can’t help but smile for the fat pay. but then again when we see that tax that was deducted, it is corresponding to the overtime pay premium that we worked for.

i wish this nightmare would end.
