PBM firms offer that opportunity. They include some national well know names like CVS/Caremark, Express Scripts, Walgreens, and Medco Health Solutions. They also contain some lesser known ones like Prime Therapeutics LLC and SureScripts. SureScript services include Prescription Benefits, Prescription History, and Prescription Routing. They are the largest national electronics prescribing network of services.
What Are PBM’s?
PBM’s provide the payer with access to a nationwide network of pharmacies that they are contracted with to provide services and drug products at negotiated prices. Specific services include affirmation that the patient is covered in the plan, verification of the contracted price for the prescription plan and authentication of what copayment the patient should be charged. A fee is charged for every transaction and is incorporated into the administrative fee.
What kinds of duties do PBM Pharmacy technicians have?
- Enter prescription information into the data processing system
- Negotiate rebates and discounts with drug manufacturers
- Generate a complete listing of electronic data received from applicable pharmacies and PBMs
- Provide information on lower cost alternatives
- Initiating and receiving authorization requests
- Research and resolve escalated member issues
- Data entry of member demographics
- Putting away stock received daily as well as pulling outdated drugs from stock
- Counting drugs as needed during physical inventories
- Use and routine maintenance of automated counting devices
- Provide information on the formulary
- Troubleshoot third party prescription claim questions and online rejections
Pharmacy technicians can earn better money and progress their careers in a PBM.
