Playing on Ships

Notes on the experience.

The ship is in and so is the musician who thought he got away from the noise but then went back to his flat to find that there was more noise than before. Instead of having to cope with engine sounds, he had to deal with the ones who would party during the night and pretend that nothing had happened.I tried to reassure him that the disturbance would be temporary, at least he had a chance to get away from the same flat where he could not practice in the afternoon because he was too tired. On a previous ship he had a cabin near the engine room and had to dodge food trolleys on the decks while playing solo. Now was recession.

So when he got back he called his only connection and a it stands, the number of solo artists would be slashed from sixteen to half that. He would not have a chance because he was not one of the stable ones on board who played regularly. He would best try in playing in an orchestra only that would mean putting up with less experienced musicians than himself. How I thought that this fellow was making it difficult for himself by limiting his choices, by being picky.

Turns out that playing solo would not grant him freedom from a barrage of noise either. He might find himself in a cruise club with piped in music that he would have to hear over what he wanted to play.

Interesting. Is this on a ‘Carnival’ type cruise ship?
    Thanks,
