Rants of a Demented Loon: Part Two: Rejection Letters

The woes of job searches.

In the current economic climate, it’s not surprisingly that job searches have become a bit competitive, in fact I think I’d be a tad naïve to assume that any job was going to be an easy catch. So I expect to have a fair amount of letters rejecting me from the position, or to not hear from employers at all.

What really annoys me, and this has now happened about five times in the last month, is an email, clearly a template rejection email, stating with regret that my skills are frankly crap and not worthy of their consideration. But that isn’t even the best bit, good readers. No, what is the icing on the cake is that they don’t even stick my name in this form rejection letter! Or even sign with a name! Just a random mass emailed form stating to the anonymous applicant that you are officially unworthy of our attention, and that we don’t even want to bother taking three seconds to type your name into the space where it would state ‘Dear …..’

Seriously, am I so rubbish that I don’t even warrant a slight hint that they’ve bothered to individualise this official statement of their lack of interest in me? Is this the norm now for companies to simply copy and paste a rejection form without adding the applicant’s name to it?

It’s very depressing right now.

I got a rejection letter like that from Hersheys when I was turned down to host a “home party”. I wrote back and said “Dear, um…oh yeah, Hersheys: I will indeed still host my own private cookie exchange. Unfortunately, Hersheys was not selected as the brand of chocolate I will be using, or promoting. You have a great holiday too!”
    I can be so snarky.
