Rush Hour
A busy day in the life of a helicopter mechanic.
Have you ever been in a case situation at the peak of the action to recount a sudden upsurge of adrenalin in your system? Maybe at the midst of a ball game, or in the middle of a commotion, a fistfight, running for a vacant seat in a crowded jeepney, or in a situation most of us would likely prefer…a shuffle in bed? If you are a man of action, you are born in the right place at the right time in the country of your choice. In a country that thrives amidst disasters and calamities with an estimated population of 82 million as of latest government statistics competing for space in a land area barely 301,000 square kilometers, just imagine what would be left of you if you stay idle at a corner.
My lazy instincts seemed to be in its normal function when I woke up for the day, I wasn’t a man of action so that I have to accept that I was the type who prefers to stay idle at a corner and fantasize. On my early thirties and being single at that, I rely my chances to meet a would-be wife in one out of a million. That would be an economical computation if the male to female ratio is 1:10. Assuming 4 out of 10 ladies were married, 2 get satisfied being alternate wives, 3 found contentment going abroad as Japayukis, domestic helpers and nurses and 1 gets fulfilled to remain idle at home to live in the country for the worse. Come what may I’ll find my dream girl like a classic Filipina hidden in the closet who have closed her eyes against the provocative issues in the tabloids and television. One who could listen to oohhs and aahhs without adverse reaction because she haven’t got the slightest notion what it meant. Or she maybe one of those beautiful faces caught at the over practice of showing her body anatomy in the late evening, drawing a number of drinkers around her in a prominent nightspot to earn a living, exposed but untouched. In a fast changing society with escalating standards of living, my ideal girl is out there waiting; a one in a million possibility. It’s a very conservative assumption don’t you think?
Hmmnn, restless thoughts, it does come to me to be back in mind to think about my responsibilities late in the day so I was oblige to leave home from Cavite at 0945H in the morning. Taking the Zapote bound jeepney from the subdivision, I arrived at the terminal quite late unable to get a seat on a jeepney filled at its capacity about to leave so I took the hanging stand for minutes until a passenger alighted at the highway. With my butt rested and my hands relieved, I was able to regard the features of the day. The average traffic, the sun quite showing its might after a light rainshower that saved me from a dusted trip. It looks like another ordinary day I have to get through and despite the worries I’m involuntarily sensing from within anticipating an office memo issued for a case of simple tardiness, there was nothing out of the ordinary about that late Friday morning. Halfway to the route, I boarded off at GSIS Subdivision and took another jeepney bound for SM Southmall. An onslaught of a sleep urge owing to the trip slowed by mild traffic caught me reaching for my Nokia 6210 on my pocket. I was hoping an incoming beep from a textmate would keep me awake but it appeared the world was too busy except for me. I arrived at Moonwalk and took an aircon bus to Baclaran letting the comfort of the ride allow me to take things leisurely despite being late. The cool ride made me forget my worries, I was amused at how I get to relax at a closed space without the sweat to make me feel the guilt. I was even more amused to realize at how the culprits in the government managed to stay cool and at ease despite mounting problems of national concern. I supposed they had more hand in complicating the issues than finding suitable solutions. Then I was reminded they are all sitting pretty in enclosed offices with full air conditioning if not luxuriating at a cooler place out of the country. Without an amount of sweat to remind of the guilt there would be enough stability under pressure for anyone to claim complete control out of the worsening economy. As always, a countermeasure to maintain peace and order is properly taken while terrorists sow terror in broad daylight.

Yes, I’m pretty lucky to get out of the country and brought out that story years back from my journal. I have lost lots of colleagues in flying and have sorts of crosswind landings that nearly knocked me down. Thanks for the comments, fortunately I only learned to write a blog when I resigned and felt closer to my countrymen now that I’m far out of the country.

I have never been in a helicopter – too afraid of heights, would have to be one with a door and some dont have them, Glad there are people who can do this kind of a job.

Quite the opposite. A very colorful life indeed, as well as life threatening. Even though people view pilots as controlled, educated and well trained experts, I’ve always thought , they had to be a bit crazy to fly an engined bird, with all due respect , of course, good crazy, for sure, and a necessity to save lives. Your command of the language is impeccable and your humor mixed with such a serious scenario is in great taste. Fine work, an edge of your seat ride and great read. Love your humor. Good One. Deep!
