Shifting Focus on The Job

How to make a boring job more interesting. How to turn a mundane, dead end job, into a fantasy.

After the assignment was finished we all went our separate ways and my life improved. Since that time I have been able to go on many hikes for fun. Most recently in The Rockies and The Alberta Badlands. Did that shift in focus back at the landfill have anything to do with those hikes in the mountains and badlands? I really believe that it did. I believe that by beginning to think about something else in this subtle way while doing what some may consider a boring, smelly, and demeaning job I was able to attract these other experiences into my life later on. I hope that Dave and Darryl, my co-workers at the dump, carried that with them and have better lives as well now.

Let us get down to the nuts and bolts of this mental process so that you can apply it in your own job. First off this is not a process of Walter Mitty like daydreaming. Far from it. Daydreaming on the job is not at all advised and could end up with you on the unemployment line. This is about a very simple and very subtle shift in mental focus. Each day before you go to your job simply sit quietly for a minute and think about your job and how whatever tasks you preform are similar to some other life experiences you may rather be involved in. Then within your mind gently place those experiences over the tasks you will most likely have to perform at work that day. If need be, make a list of tasks and their experience counterparts. Above all continue, or start, to do your current job to the extreme best of your abilities.

If you are cleaning staff at a hotel, simply go about cleaning the rooms with the FEELING that you a tidying up YOUR hotel room, as if you are staying at the hotel as a guest. Do this as you would expect it to be done if you were a guest, in other words, pretend you are your own maid.

If you work at a Retail Store do so with the FEELING you are shopping for yourself. This can achieve two things. A better mental attitude that attracts a good life and also help you to know the products you are selling. Another effective FEELING to use in retail is the FEEL like the store’s owner. In the future this feeling may attract ownership of your own store. If you choose that technique and keep it to yourself it will show in a sense of pride for the store that the current owner will appreciate in their staff.

If you are working at a restaurant you can use the latter technique as well, or use your coffee breaks for FEELINGS of being a patron to attract more dining out experiences. Imagine what kind of restaurant experience you would want.

The main thing is to generate a mental attitude of well being. The word wealth comes from the words well being.

In order to keep on track and create feelings of well being within yourself, you should keep what you are doing to yourself in the workplace. It is not a good idea to tell your co-workers or employer about this mental process. Your employer most likely will take it as you are unhappy with your current position. Even if you are, and the job is something that no one in the right mind should be happy with, you do not want your employer to know your true feelings. The shifting of focus that gives you the appearance of being extremely happy in the moment can benefit you in your current position if you keep quiet about the motive behind it. Keeping it from your co-workers is perhaps even more important as every workplace seems to have that one person that does not want anyone else to be happy. Those types will try any trick to topple all the work you have done trying to FEEL GOOD, and most likely run to tell your employer that you are talking crazy.

Remember, even working in a garbage dump you can FEEL like you are ON TOP OF THE WORLD, on a adventure holiday.

Mark, I think you are onto something. We might as well make the job as pleasent as we can and who knows what will come from the experience. A very good idea.

Great attitude. You should read Napoleon Hills Law of Success, if you haven’t already.
