Six Things to ASK Yourself Before Accepting a JOB Offer Overseas

Tips for those who plan to work overseas.

So you want to try your luck overseas? Raring to go for an adventure, meet new people, immerse in an exotic culture, discover new things, all while doing a better paying job?

1)      Is this for real? In this day and age, the internet provides a very popular venue to market your skills all over the world. Employers are also searching online, either through their own website, employment agencies or headhunters to look for people who would fit their needs. Very fast, convenient and cost effective. However, there is a danger that lurks. Con artists also flourish in the internet so you should confirm if you are dealing with the right people.

·         Check their website.

·          Keyword search their company name in forums. If it’s a scam , most probably you are not the first victim.

·         Ask people you know who already live and work in your target destination.

·         Check the offer letter. Is it within salary standards of the area? If it’s too good to be true, of course, it isn’t.

·         Do they ask for a certain amount of money for ‘processing fees’? Here you need to be really, really careful.

2)      Am I getting a fair offer? This is of course, subject to your own idea of fairness, also depends on your skill, experience and education. It also depends significantly to labor standards of your target destination. However, it is worth mentioning the factors that follow:

·         Basic salary and allowances

·         Gratuity or End of Service Pay

·         Plane Tickets

·         Health Insurance

·         Food and accommodation

·         Other Benefits  (Family Visa, Sponsoring a relative, etc.

·         Cost of living

3)      Am I aware of the local laws and culture? Be aware of the do’s and don’ts. Research in the internet. Your own government agencies may even provide you with information. Friends and family who are already familiar will be more than willing to give their tips. Follow the rules, it would make life much easier.

4)      Do I know my way around? Of course not. But  it would be very helpful to check if you will be assigned in the middle of nowhere or at the heart of a city. This way, you will have an idea what activities you can and cannot do, ease of communication, transportation and logistics, and the amount of compatriot support that you might get.

5)      Do I have my contingency plan? You should also know your way in case things go wrong beyond your control. Do you know any friends, relatives, consulate or embassy and how to get to them? Not  to scare you but it is always good to be ready for anything if you go where you haven’t been before.

6)      What are my long-term goals?  While away from home and trying to adjust to your new environment and work pressures, it is very easy to forget why you are there in the first place. Always keep in mind your long term goals to guide you in your decisions, and you will have a better chance at success.

Good luck!
