Temporary Work
Some of my experiences and thoughts on working temporary as opposed to permanent work.
Temporary employment. After many years of working ‘Captive’ ( I think that you might guess the meaning here. This is the nine to five work that most of us do all of our lives). I decided to get into ‘contract’ work. That is work until the project is finished and then on to the next assignment. No ‘you’re being released’ or ‘we are moving to a new location’ or the many excuses you might receive when a company decides to let your hire go or lapse.
Temporary work. That is just what you signed on for and so there is no surprise here. In fact you can easily determine when your project is finished because you know that this might be a rush job and that is just what you are here for.
You were hired for your expertise in this particular assignment and mostly your fellow employees understand this. They also want their company to succeed. And they understand the need for a consultant with the experience to get the job done and help the company out of this particular situation. Either a rush order or something to be done that the company has not done before.
And then there is the healthy thank you and if we need your services again can we call on you. Of course the answer would be a resounding yes. And then you have my number and my Agency’s number. If not then you give them your card before leaving.
And then the feeling of accomplishment as you travel your way back to your office to look into your next assignment. Of course the travel might be greater but then the pay is good and you enjoy the variety of the work and the feeling of accomplishment that you get out of doing this kind of ‘contract’ or tempoary work.
Now back to the ‘captive’ work idea that we started with here. The boss comes over . ‘We’re starting a night shift and of course you are on it’. I guess I decided that while he was walking over to my bench or desk area as the case might be.
Now I don’t mean to downgrade these good people that we chose to work for and with. They are great and we do everything we can to work with them in a satisfactory manner and to be courteous and friendly at all times. In fact there are outside activities provided by the company where we get to know all our fellow employees better. Picnics, bowling leagues and the like. In fact at one company I was in a bicycle get together club and that was great fun and fellowship.
So therefore you might say ‘why rush to the temporary or just ‘contract’ work. Well after so many years we feel that we have the right to ease up a bit and to have a little more freedom, maybe to pick our jobs more closely, and so we get temporary or contract work. And we find as the years go on that it is a great enjoyment and fulfillment for us.
I have been retired for a number of years now and yet my resume is still on line and with me as I seek article writing or freelance work. After a career spanning many ‘many’ years I am proud to still be able to contribute to our society and its worthwhile projects. Old soldiers never pass away they just go on to greater endeavors. As I remember my ROTC days at what college I was able to do. And so some college on a reply makes me feel quite satisfied that my temporary work is beneficial to myself and to others also. That is some of the why that I now do temporary or ‘contract’ work. So good luck and ‘God Bless’.
