That’s Not My Job – Taking Responsibility in The Workplace
Attached is an article I’ve written which is geared towards the professional growth arena.
The success of a company cannot be accomplished by one man’s determination alone. Moreover, a company’s goals may be difficult to achieve if the group struggles to work as seamless unit.
Though there may be clear definitions of an individual’s job description, it is not uncommon for employees to find themselves being challenged to step outside the realm of their normal job duties.
In a busy environment, it is very tempting to leave an incomplete task belonging to another team member unaddressed.
You certainly don’t want to be known as the company slacker, nor would you want to gain the reputation as the company pushover. A steady balance must be maintained between the two extremes in order to uphold an exceptional level of professionalism.
Go the extra mile for your teammates. If an incident arises that you can handle while your co-worker is busy or unavailable, assist the situation as best as you can. After practicing this often enough, you will notice that the courtesy will be reciprocated through other scenarios.
Recognize one another for a job well done. This does not always have to be a management to employee exchange. Coworkers are just as capable of offering feedback (and/or constructive criticism) when applies.
Try to see things from a broader perspective rather than thinking, “That’s Not My Job.” The tasks that you fall short in completing may create a domino effect of work for others to clean up behind you.
Considering that everyone shares a common interested in creating effortless workdays, it’s “Everyone’s Job” to build a healthy, team oriented work environment.
