The Life of a Neurological Surgeon

A brief description of a neurosurgeon’s required training and qualifications, employment forecast, working conditions, nature of work, significant points, earnings (salary) and related careers.

This isn’t the only nature of work you’ll be involved with, though. As a neurosurgeon you might also need to diagnose patients with altered nervous systems. If you do not yet know, some altered nervous systems include brain injuries, strokes, or seizure patients. You might even have to do some office work! That’s right, it’s not all just about poking at someone’s brain, sometimes documentation and reports are required of neurosurgeons, or any type of surgeon for that matter.

Your work does have some significant points though; some that will make you feel like the happiest person on earth. As a surgeon of the brain, you will have the capacity to “renew” a patient’s ability to resume normal livelihood, you are a life changer! You also have personal satisfaction of your single capability to bring lives of adults and children back to the norm. I mean, you can turn someone’s life that was recently hell, into one that the person is now able to call… a life.

Personal satisfaction is not the only reward to receive for withholding this amazing occupation, and even though you should never choose a job because of money, the salary is pretty great. I’ll start off with the benefits, for you receive just about the same benefits for starting, mid-range, and maximum pay. Base salary, large bonuses, 401k, and disability are all benefits for a neurosurgeon. As a side note, 401k is money that you decide to let your company to take out of your salary to be put away for your retirement. A starting neurosurgeon’s salary is approximately 354,000 dollars. Add 17,000 dollars in bonuses, and you have a whopping 371,000 dollars for a starting salary. Now to move onto a median salary, which are substantially higher than starting. 541,000 dollars is a mid-range neurosurgeons approximate pay. They also get 25,000 dollars in bonuses and a total of 566,000 dollars for the year. Lastly is the maximum paid neurosurgeon earns 936,000 dollars each year. They also receive about 30,000 dollars in bonuses; this will bring the yearly salary up to 966,000 dollars.

Now, if you don’t like how neurosurgeons and their lifestyles sound, there are two other occupations that I think are related to the job. One is spine surgeon, and the other cardiovascular surgeon. They both have to do with major parts of the body, ones that will affect how everything works.

To you, it might seem that this job is the most awful one you can possible imagine. But for me it’s absolutely perfect. I’ve always been interested in the brain, there’s so much to learn about; plus, my mother is in the medical field, and I figured, why not combine my two favorites. I have the patience required for this job, and most else needed to become successful in the occupation. It’s not just about making money, or getting to cut into people’s brains either, it’s the fact that you have so much power to save the lives of people who have less hope then the run of the mill person, people who are miserable, in pain all of the time, and I have the chance and privilege of saving their lives.
