The Ramblings of a Disgruntled Graduate
Some facts and personal experience about trying to get a job after graduating.
Hope Is Not Lost
Hear me now fellow graduates, we can not give up. There are tips and tricks (not magic) out there to help further your chances of landing a ‘good’ job. One is to broaden your job criteria. As Mike Hill, the Chief Executive of the Higher Education Careers Service says: ‘There are hundreds of different professions. People need to cast their nets wider, look at professions related to their field and take careers advice’.
Another thing to do and yes we all hate it, is to gain some work experience, paid or unpaid. It looks good on your CV and will help you to ascertain what field of work you feel you can make a career in. If you are still at University then you will have little excuse not to. When you graduate you will be thanking your earlier self for working at that care home the previous summer wiping old folk’s bottoms. If you have already graduated and are having to pay the bills then it may not be so easy. But, it is your future and what you make of it. Words of wisdom indeed, if I may say so myself.
For those who are yet to graduate, start looking for a job now. When I ask younger friends who are at University what they plan to do, many reply as not having a clue. I try and bestow my wisdom upon them but it goes on deaf ears. If you start looking now you lessen the chances of finding yourself in a degrading job where folk talk down to you and have a look on their face that makes it seem that you are no better than the dog muck on their shoes. So, get going now and take advantage of such sites as this. It is this kind of experience that can make the difference, or so I hope…

Oh wonderful Manchester or should i say Salford. Now in West Virigina and miss that northern humour. I have done lots of stuff so far and i am now currently travelling internationally as an aerial photographer. However along the way i have done lots of other stuff. Some just to put food on the table and others because i was inspired by my work. My advice is the same as yours. Think outside the box, offer your self for training at a much reduced rate. Apply for jobs that interest you but you are not qualified for and keep on hassling them so that they give you a foot in the door. Persistance is a wonderful thing. Oh and i miss Tesco too. Honestly
