Top 10 Reasons to Update Your Headshot

If you are deciding whether or not you need a new photo, you may want to consider the following.

1. Is the photo a great representation of you?

Does the shot look like you? This is the first impression most clients get to see of the actor. Sometimes an actor has a headshot that is too glamorous and looks better than they physically do at an audition. It has been said time and again that your photo should not look better than you do in person. It is sending the message that perhaps you did not prepare yourself for the audition or that you have aged since the photo was taken. All reasons for disappointment in the eager client’s eyes.

The photo should look just like you at your best audition day. Then you should be able to replicated the look whenever you get that exciting call.

2. Have you gone through recent weight change?

If you have gained or lost about 15 pounds, it is probably best that you get new photos to reflect your changed appearance. “Look like your headshot please” seems to be a common statement. Especially if you look better and you’ve worked hard at improving yourself, then treat yourself and your agent to a new and improved headshot.

3. Are you being typecast as the same character for every show?

Do they keep casting you in the same role of mom? Would you like to play the vixen every once in awhile? Well maybe it’s the photo leaving the impression of only one style. Depending on your clothing choice, posing and other factors, the photograph may not be as versatile as you may like it to be.

4. Did you change your hairstyle or hair color?

The hair on your head can frame your face or detract from it. If you’ve recently changed the color of your hair, then it may be worth noting to your agent and you should definite send them a marketable image of your new look. Men may want to experiment with facial hair in some shots to show a different character.

5. Do you only have a black and white version?

With the now popular option of color headshots, this may be a smart investment to make to add to your portfolio. Digital photographers even have the capability to turn original color prints into black and white, sepia or even painted effects. It makes great sense to have a color shot on file.

6. Are you in the same age bracket that the shot exhibits?

Was your previous shot taken when you were in your early 20’s and now you are up for leading parts? Especially if you look older than your headshot, you may be missing out on some really fine roles that may be just perfect with your current look.

7. Are you preparing to move to a different location?

Industry standards vary depending on the market that you are in. Your current shot may look too regional for Los Angeles and New York. You would want a headshot that can compete with and looks current.

8. Do you need different shots to market yourself with?

Maybe you love your headshot but it’s the only one you have. There are times where it can benefit you to have another shot of you that you can post on your website, blog page, post cards and other places to show off your personality and professionalism. You can update your photograph with certain marketing materials in mind to build your own publicity package for yourself.

9. Is your photo too theatrical and not commercial enough?

Stage actors transitioning to commercial work or other performers looking to market themselves across the board, may not be completely prepared to use their current shot to meet their new professional goals. There is a difference in the way a commercial actor would submit for a role compared to perhaps a Shakespearean actor for example. The first shot would be more personable and warm while the other may have a look of intrigue or a mature complexity.

10. Do you want to keep your contacts excited and thinking about you?

Revitalizing your photo may revitalize your career. People always remember when things are fresh and new. So try updating your headshot and see what new exciting possibilities await. It’s a smart investment to make.
