Use Summer Vacation to Build Resume and Career Training

Summer vacation is a time for taking a break from the daily school-study routine, but not time to put your future career on hold. Use summer vacation to build your résumé and train for your future career with these tips.

School will soon be out and the lazy days of summer beckon. But for teens and young academic adults, the summer vacation is prime time for résumé building and career training.

Any work-related activity, paid or volunteer, will be something that can be added to your résumé and help open doors for future employment after graduation. If the summer work activity is in the chosen field of study, it will also provide early career training that will help in the future.

Find A Summer Job

Any job worked during summer vacation will provide work experience and look good on your résumé, especially if the summer job is related to the work field you plan to go into. But don’t reject a minimum wage job at a fast food restaurant just because your career goal is on the opposite end of the spectrum. A job in a fast food restaurant will show future employers many things about your work ethic and character, like reliability, team player and the ability to multi-task.

Volunteer Your Time

Engage in your community by volunteering some of your summer vacation time for a worthy cause. Volunteering will broaden horizons, build networks for future employment plus give back to your community. Volunteer activities can be placed on your résumé and provide career training on many levels, like learning organizational skills and developing a can-do attitude.
