Veterinarians
This is a paper I did for school. I LOVE ANIMALS!!!
Veterinarians are an important part of society. They must go through college, and work hard to learn all they can about animals. They have the job to take care of the pets we adore. This challenging but interesting job starts with school. In order to do well as a veterinarian, a few classes could be recommended. First, biology, to learn about living creatures. Biochemistry and chemistry will help veterinarians determine problems or illnesses based on chemical tests. Genetics is another useful class. It can help vets understand if a disease is hereditary, or chemical. This can help discover the problem, and hopefully fix it. Animal nutrition is very useful when it comes to giving advice to pet owners.
It allows the vet to suggest a good pet food. Also, it can help explain a sudden weight loss or gain. Another semi-useful class is zoology. It can help with certain vets who specialize on zoo animals, and how to handle them. Vets take many more classes, need several qualifications (OOH online).
There a couple of other accomplishments needed to become a vet. One is a medical degree. Another is a doctor’s license. Usually, the pre-vet needs to fulfill a two year internship, at a veterinarians office. The usual college length is about 8 years, but it can vary. (Fergusons) After they meet these requirements, they need to be mentally prepared.
In order to survive as a vet, they need to be willing to tell families if something bad happens to there pet. Also, they need to be willing to put animals down even if they don’t think it’s right. (Fergusons) If these things cause them to change their minds about becoming a vet, than they may want to follow one of the many related occupations. Since animals are great entertainment, and lovable pets, it is no surprise that many jobs revolve around them. For example, an animal keeper. This is only the first of many careers similar to veterinarians. Others are animal breeder, animal caretaker, animal handler, biologist, veterinarian technician, and even a zoologist(Fergusons). However, if someone decides to become a veterinarian, than they will need to do a variety of things.
Some things vets have to do can determine the life or death of an animal. Other things are as simple as check-ups. They have to do some of the following things more than others, but most do all of them eventually. Some things they have to do are, perform surgery, give vaccinations, give check-ups, fix teeth, treat and cover wounds, give blood tests, help animals give birth, give advice to pet owners, see blood, bones, and organs, teach pet owners to take care of and feed their pets, and give X-rays. They do some of these things while risking being bitten, kicked, and scratched. They also work long hours.(Animals PG.23-25) The job of veterinarian is semi- popular considering that about 61,000 were hired in the U.S. in 2006.(OOH online) They can earn from $40,960-$127,050 plus a year. The average salary is 68,910 a year (Fergusons). They make a good amount of money, for doing such an interesting job. Veterinarians have an interesting history.
The Very first veterinary journal was written a long time ago in A.D. 300. This shows how long people have shown care for the welfare of animals. Also, the first veterinary school was opened in 1762 at Lyons, France. Another cool fact is that from 2004 to 2014 the expected employment increase is 16.4%. This means by 2014, many more people will take the responsibility to care for the animals we all care for so deeply. Veterinarians truly are wonderful.
