What Not to Wear to Work
How you dress says a lot about you. When you’re in a professional environment, it may say more than you think!
We’ve all seen it. That one person who stands out in the office, and all we can think is “are you serious”. How you dress says a great deal about you. It can cue people in to your personality, behavior, thoughts, beliefs, and much more. The list is rather endless. It is inevitable to be judged by others, and to sometimes judge others ourselves. We all fear being that person, so read on for some easy tips to keep in mind as you dress yourself in the morning.
Moderation is your friend. It is okay to like bright colors, but keep in mind in a professional environment, things should mostly be neutral. Wearing a nice top or tie that is colorful or full of a subtle pattern is a very nice way to spruce up a suit.
Jewelry should also be moderated. Layers of necklaces for woman are currently “in”. Keep this to somewhat of a minimum at work. If you’re going to have a busy necklace, that should be the “icing” of your outfit. What does that mean? It means that your necklace should be the highlight of your outfit. Nothing else should really draw attention to the eye. Everything else should be pretty neutral. You do not need to dress in all black, of course, but plan carefully. A nice colored top will work well with again, that neutral suit, and the necklace will pull it together nicely. If you do go this route, keep any other jewlery very simple.
Mini skirts do not belong in a professional environment. Unless of course, that sort of thing is your profession. If it is, then I highly doubt how you dress at all really matters at work, then. Skirts should be at knee level. No exceptions. There is no need to have a skirt that drags on the ground, nor is there a need to have one that reveals what should be hidden.
Wear hosiery with skirts, too. Neutral hosiery, that is. No crazy designs, or colors, and fishnets should probably stay home.
Shoes need careful attention as well. No sandals, flip flops, Crocs, open toes, etc. Heels should not be very high. Platforms are not necessary either. Work is not a date. Colors are ok, but they should be conservative.
Do not clash colors or patterns. This is true for any outfit.
Wear things that fit. Know your size and stick with it, even if you don’t like the number.
Remove the stitches when you buy a suit. There are large X’s that are stitches in things that are meant to be removed. They are only put on the garment for the sake of it hanging in a store. When you get home, remove it so it fits better, or be the laughing stock of the office.
These are just a few tips out of many more. Keep in mind how you look to other people and what they may take away from looking at you. Try to be conservative without being boring. There are many lines to be crossed in the professional world which will not do you any good; try not to do so by using these tips and your own discretion.
