Why Nursing is the Popular Choice Among Filipinos
Discussing the top three reasons why Filipinos study nursing. It gives an idea about the present situation of nurses especially Filipino nurses.
Nursing, at present times, is the fastest growing career in the world. In the Philippines alone, almost million of students are enrolling in the said course and every year, it is increasing. Even the tuition fee for this course is very expensive; many are not discourage to pursue this career. (More or less Php 50, 000 per semester, depending on the school plus book allowance and other expenses). They are trying their best to have an enough fund in supporting their education.
Nursing for many Filipino is the answer for their own distress. Many of them believe that this will give them a comfortable way of living and will guide them in achieving their own dreams and alleviating the burden in their own lives. Why these people have this kind of mentality? Why they are craving to become a nurse?
Well, based on what I have observed and experience, I compiled the top 3 reasons why Filipino enrolled in nursing.
To work abroad
Most of the nursing students I have met said that they are planning to work abroad after they finished nursing. They are not interested to practice this career here in the Philippines because of unrewarding benefits and low salary.(compare with other country like US, UK and Australia, which offer a very competitive and rewarding benefits and high salary) Some of them quoted “it will take 48 years before they earn and acquire the amount they spend in their studies”
They believe that this will help them in giving their own family a good way of living and provide them a good future. They are very willing to sacrifice their own selves in exchange of having a good life.
Their own choice
it is very disappointing because only few of the nursing students choose this course because they like it. It means that few of them have the heart and dedication in this career. These people have the passion and have TLC (tender loving care) which is essential in being an effective care provider. According to these students, they do not study nursing just to earn dollars or pounds but to assist and help people in their health. Although, they are also aiming to have a good life, working abroad is not the only way in fulfilling this goal. They believe that there is hope in the country and besides, they will not live too far away from their love ones.
Choice of their parents
Most of the nursing students now a day enroll in nursing because their parents want them to. Even it is against their will, they don’t have any choice because their parents might not send them to school. Their parents keep on telling them that nursing is nice and offer a high salary especially abroad. And besides, most of them believe that their parents know best. But the fact that their parents are forcing them, this will only allow their child to study without any goals to fulfill but just study for the sake of their parents.

first of all, nursing is not all that. i currently practice as a nurse in the new york city area and bedside nursing is rough, tough, and not easy. second of all, you have to love what you are doing in order to succeed in your profession, otherwise you will burn out. third of all, you have to keep studying and keep learning. it’s the only way to improve yourself as a nurse. i would advise anyone who wants to go into nursing to evaluate if they want to do it for a living by volunteering at your local hospital. expose yourself to the profession first before you jump ahead into the field. lastly, why are filipinos drawn to the nursing profession including filipino americans? top 3 reasons: 1-money, 2-parents, 3-personal satisfaction. either one of the 3 or a combination of 2 or more. in any case, filipinos are reputable in the nursing profession, at least in my opinion they are. we’re dependable, reliable, and on top of things. sorry, a bit ethnocentric, but i believe it’s true.
