Why The Poor Economy May Be Good News for New Graduates
Five simple things you need to do to be successful in landing a job as a new graduate at a time when many experienced candidates are also searching for jobs due to the poor economy.
Good News in a Poor Economy?
The poor economy is, not all doom and gloom, so if you are a recent college grad or plan on graduating in the next year, it is time to take advantage of a good thing! While many companies have completed lay-offs, some companies are taking advantage of the poor economy and finding very talented and experienced individuals who may have been the victim of a lay-off at a competitor or within another industry. Right now you may be thinking, and how is competing against more experienced candidates good news? It really comes down to “packaging”.
The Packaging
The packaging is all about you! How you present yourself to future employers is very important and not nearly as impossible as some so called experts would have you believe. Packaging is not just the way you dress, it is the whole picture- how you think, behave, laugh, work, and perform. Yes…the last word is “perform”. The packaging has everything to do with your natural given talents, complete with a resume on top. Confused? Read on.
The Secret
Employers today are looking for something more valuable than experience, they are looking for talent. Google it. Bing it. Use any search engine you want, but the secret is organizations understand that hiring one talented individual is better than hiring two people with lots of experience and crappy attitudes. The rapid down turn in the economy helped organizations quickly discover that the need to trim back included a very attractive opportunity; the opportunity to build the talent based organization top executives thought would take them optimistically 10 years to create. Thanks to the declining economy, many companies were able to get rid of a lot of experienced mediocre people. Herb Kelleher wasn’t kidding when he said Southwest Airlines “hires for attitude and trains for skills”. You are born with either a positive or negative attitude, it is just the way we are hard wired. Southwest hires for positive attitudes, the rest end up working for competitors…some of which probably were hired on at Continental given the fact they held over 40 passengers on a plane without working restrooms, without water or food, for over 1/2 a night at an airport in Rochester, Minnesota when the final destination of the flight, Minneapolis was a short 2 hour drive away from the tarmac. Yes, officials at Southwest are probably mourning the fact these seemingly incompetent employees were not theirs. Of course I am joking, but Southwest hires for attitude and obviously aptitude. Here is where you learn the five secrets you need to package yourself to get hired.
