Work-a-holic: Addicted to Work
Only a good description of this reality.

The term “workaholic” is used to describe all the people who make a lot: those who rush continuously, are always occupied permanently or perform many tasks. It is an addiction to action, in the strictest sense of the word. The type of action can vary and sometimes seem to be addicted to the quiet and still resting. At that time, surely his mind is working at full speed, solving problems, devising plans and tasks.
There is no medical definition of generally accepted definition for this condition, although some forms of stress and obsessive compulsive disorder may be related to the work. The work in question is usually associated with a job, but can also refer to other independent activities such as sports, music and art.
Work addiction affects mostly professional males between 35 and 50 years, professionals and executives, who use their work so compulsive. Addicts who are working to transform their work in their home.
Unlike other units, it achieves a social consensus, is welcome. Dignifies true that work and pay the bills and accounts, developing personal skills and advance to the individual and society. When overrides all other aspects of life and affects the rest of collaborators, is when the power ceases to be and becomes a habit. It is when the person is “decentralized” or leaves your school, your balance and harmony. “
Social pressure to succeed, over-ambition and an inability to establish an order of priorities are some of the main reasons that cause addiction.
Among the damage to health more frequently observed, related to fatigue and are working are:
- Headaches, neck and back
- Dizziness.
- Eye pain or visual fatigue in people who work long hours in front of a computer.
- Aggression and moodiness.
- Gastritis and ulcers
- Fatigue
But these symptoms are like calls attention to the body and mind needs to relax, to prevent more serious illnesses such as:
- Cardiovascular problems like strokes, heart failure.
- Vascular problems such as varicose veins, haemorrhoids or stroke.
Addiction to work, the principal of this self-destructive behavior, addiction grows and adds to their ranks without being confronted by any campaign of health education. Addiction to work is accepted without discussion by the whole society. Far from criticism, such addicts is awarded by the society very regularly: the success and death.
There are three different types of addiction. First, cognitive or mental anxiety and irritability, depression, increased need to work more and spend more time at work, concern for work performance, the continuous feeling of being overwhelmed, not to get everything feeling of emotional emptiness and the undervaluation of other types of activity other than work.
The second group are the physiological symptoms of stress, sleeplessness and, ultimately, hypertension and increased vascular illnesses.
The third group are the symptoms of behavior: the almost compulsive need to make lists of things to do and write on the schedule to the smallest detail, inability to be without work for a prolonged period without experiencing anxiety, restlessness and irritability; distance from family and friends.
It is important to clarify that not all intense dedication to work is addictive. There may be people who know workers in their off time to work addicted. The real lack of control, disconnect and no work is the priority of everything that surrounds it. The work addict is a person dissatisfied or irritable when away from work.
Although it is difficult to accept the addiction to work, it is necessary to make the effort to share the time in other activities such as with family, friends and physical activity. Doing so will bring many benefits to our physical and mental health, and also for our relationships.
